Commentary
Then, indeed, his mother and the woman whom Jesus healed from insanity came to weep at the crucified one, [[Editor’s note: in the printed version: 'where the crucified one was,' in the historical text: 'at the crucified one,' in the manuscript: 'where' without punctuation, with a letter (ط), as if the scribe considered it an error due to the rarity of adding 'where' to a singular noun, since it is typically added to verbal or nominal clauses, yet there are many examples of its use with singulars, such as the poet's verse: 'And we quenched death with the sword, making it a fortress... and indeed, among them was where the leaders of the banners were']]. Jesus came to them and said, 'Why are you weeping?' They said, 'Because of you!' He replied, 'Indeed, Allah has raised me to Him, and no harm has befallen me except good, and this is a likeness for them. Command the disciples to lead me to such-and-such a place.' They led Him there, eleven in number. The one who had sold Him and pointed Him out to the Jews [[Editor’s note: 'found Him' and 'sought Him': meaning they did not find Him, so they inquired about Him]]. His companions inquired about Him, and they said, 'He repented for what he did, so he choked and killed himself.' Jesus said, 'If he had repented, Allah would have accepted his repentance!' Then He asked them about a boy who followed them called 'Yuhanna' [[Editor’s note: in the historical text: 'called Yuhanna' is 'Yahya']]. He said, 'He is with you, so go forth, for each of you will speak in the tongue of your people, so warn them and call them to account.' [[Editor’s note: Hadith: 10780 - Narrated by Abu Ja'far in History 2:22,23.]]
* *Others said: Rather, Jesus asked those present in the house to cast His likeness upon one of them, and a man volunteered, His likeness was cast upon him, and that man was killed, while Jesus, son of Mary, was raised to Allah.
Those who narrated this said: 10781 - It was narrated to us by Bashir ibn Mu'adh, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Yazid, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Sa'id, from Qatada, who said: 'Indeed, we killed Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah, and they did not kill Him nor crucify Him,' until He said, 'And Allah is Mighty, Wise.' These were the Jews, enemies of Allah, who conspired to kill Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah, [[Editor’s note: in the printed version: 'they were known for killing Jesus,' which makes no sense here, and in the manuscript the letters are unclear, but the correct reading is as stated]]. They claimed they had killed Him and crucified Him. It is reported to us that the Prophet of Allah, Jesus, son of Mary, said to His companions, 'Who among you will bear My likeness, for He will be killed?' A man from His companions said, 'I, O Messenger of Allah!' That man was killed, and Allah prevented His Prophet and raised Him to Him.
10782 - It was narrated to us by al-Hasan ibn Yahya, who said, 'It was reported to me by 'Abd al-Razzaq, who said, 'It was reported to me by Ma'mar, from Qatada, regarding the verse: 'And they did not kill Him nor crucify Him, but it was a likeness for them,' he said: 'His likeness was cast upon a man from the disciples, and that man was killed. Jesus, son of Mary, presented this to them, saying, 'Who among you will bear My likeness, and for whom is Paradise?' A man said, 'Upon me.'
10783 - It was narrated to us by Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Asbat, from al-Suddi: that the Children of Israel confined Jesus and nineteen men from the disciples in a house. Jesus said to His companions, 'Who among you will take My image and be killed, with Paradise as a reward?' One of them took it, and Jesus was raised to the heavens. When the disciples emerged, they saw nineteen men, and they informed them that Jesus had been raised to the heavens.
They began counting them and found one fewer each time, seeing an image of Jesus among them, and they doubted. Thus, they killed the man, believing him to be Jesus, and crucified him. This is the verse of Allah, exalted and glorified: 'And they did not kill Him nor crucify Him, but it was a likeness for them,' until He said, 'And Allah is Mighty, Wise.'
10784 - It was narrated to us by al-Muthanna, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Abu al-Hudhayfa, who said, 'It was narrated to me by Shubl, from Ibn Abi Najih, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Buzayd: that Jesus, son of Mary, said, 'Who among you will bear My likeness in place of me and be killed?' A man from His companions said, 'I, O Messenger of Allah!' His likeness was cast upon him, and they killed him. This is the verse: 'And they did not kill Him nor crucify Him, but it was a likeness for them.'
