Biography

Muḥammad ibn Jarīr at-Ṭabarī (839-923 CE) was one of the most prominent early Islamic scholars. His monumental tafsir, 'Jāmiʿ al-bayān ʿan taʾwīl āy al-Qurʾān', is considered one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works of Quranic exegesis. At-Tabari compiled narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his companions, and early scholars, providing extensive historical context and multiple interpretations for each verse.

Tafsir Methodology

At-Tabari's methodology emphasizes historical narrations (riwaya) and linguistic analysis. He presents multiple interpretations without always choosing one, allowing readers to explore different scholarly views. His work is especially valuable for understanding early Islamic thought and the historical context of revelation.
