24Say, “If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your spouses and your clan and the wealth you have earned and the trade you apprehend will recede and the homes you like are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and Jihād in His way, then, wait until Allah comes with His command. Allah does not lead the sinning people to the right path.”

Commentary

His saying, exalted and majestic is He:

﴿Say, 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your tribe, and the wealth which you have acquired, and the commerce in which you fear decline, and the dwellings in which you take pleasure are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the disobedient people.'﴾

This verse strengthens the view of those who see that this and the one before it are intended to encourage migration. In the context of His saying: ﴿then wait﴾, there is a clear warning. And His saying: 'by His command,' Al-Hasan said: it refers to punishment or retribution from Allah. Mujahid said: it refers to the conquest of Mecca. The meaning is: if Allah brings His command, and you have not prepared what will earn you reward and status in Islam.

The sons are mentioned in the verse because their mention is beloved. The sons are central in affection, and they are not like that in following their fathers in their opinions as in the previous verse. The majority of people read: 'and your tribe,' while Aasim alone read differently, and Abu Rajaa and Abu Abdur-Rahman, and 'Ismah read: 'and your tribes.' This plural is preferred since everyone has a tribe that is specific to them. It is also preferred in the singular that Abu al-Hasan al-Akhfash said: the Arabs usually say 'tribes' and rarely say 'tribes.' And ﴿you have acquired﴾ means: you have earned. The origin of 'acquisition' and 'engagement' is the approach to something. ﴿And commerce in which you fear decline﴾ is clear regarding types of wealth. Ibn al-Mubarak said: it refers to daughters who do not get married and for whom there are no suitors. And 'dwellings' is the plural of dwelling with the 'kaf' opened, a place of residence. What is of this type that has a weak letter is usually in the form of 'ma'fid' with a broken 'ain' like 'maw'id' and 'mawtin.' The dwellings are the palaces and houses. And 'more beloved' is the news of 'was.' Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf used to read it: 'more beloved' in the nominative, and he has a report regarding that with Yahya ibn Ya'mar. Al-Hajjaj asked him: 'Do you hear me making a mistake?' He said: 'Yes, in this word,' and he mentioned to him the nominative 'more beloved' and he denied it.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

And that is outside the Arabic language in that it is implied in 'was' that the matter and the affair are. And it was not read that way. And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿And Allah does not guide the disobedient people﴾ is a general term intended for specificity regarding those who persist in their disobedience, or it is an absolute generality in that there is no guidance from the perspective of disobedience.
