45O you who believe, when you face a group (in battle), stand firm and remember Allah abundantly, so that you may be successful. 46Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not quarrel with each other, lest you should lose courage, and your prowess should evaporate; and be patient. Surely, Allah is with the patient. 47And do not be like those who set forth from their homes waxing proud and showing off to people, preventing (people) from the way of Allah. Allah is All-Encompassing of what they do.

Commentary

'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' Allah, the Exalted, says: "O you who have believed, when you meet a force, be firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful." "And obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute and thus you will fail and your strength will depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient." "And do not be like those who emerged from their homes arrogantly and to be seen by people, and they hinder from the way of Allah. And Allah is All-Encompassing of what they do." This is a command regarding what calls for victory and the reason for honor. It is a counsel from Allah directed according to the context in the verse of weakness. The saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, aligns with the meaning of the verse: "Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety. But when you meet them, be firm." Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: And thus it is appropriate for a Muslim in the position of leadership and judgment not to seek or wish for it. If he is tested, he should be patient in establishing the truth. And "the force" refers to the group; its origin is "fi'wa" which comes from "fa'awtu," meaning I gathered. Then Allah, the Exalted, commanded to increase His remembrance there, as it is the refuge of the one who seeks help and the support of the one who seeks assistance. Qatadah said: Allah made His remembrance obligatory at the time when they are most occupied, at the time of striking with swords. Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This remembrance is subtle because raising voices in the place of fighting is bad and disliked if it is mere utterance. However, if it is from the group at the time of the charge, it is good and beneficial against the enemy. Qais ibn Abbad said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, disliked noise in three situations: during the recitation of the Qur'an, at funerals, and in battle. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Seek the response to your supplication at the time of battle, the establishment of prayer, and the descent of rain." Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: It is disliked to cover the face during battle. Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: And for this - and Allah knows best - the mujahidun (those who strive) are accustomed to lowering their voices during battle out of respect for it. And "you may be successful" means you will attain your desires and reach your hopes. This is similar to the saying of Labid: 'Be successful with what you wish, for weakness may be attained, and the clever may be deceived.' And His saying, the Exalted, "And obey Allah and His Messenger," is a continuation of the counsel and taking hold of them in their dispute regarding the matter of Badr and their contention. And "and thus you will fail" is in the accusative due to the conjunction in response to the prohibition. Abu Hatim said in the book of 'Ibrahim': "and thus you will fail" with a broken 'shīn' is not well-known. The majority of people read: "and your strength will depart" with the 'tā' from above and the accusative of the 'bā'. Hubeirah read from Hafs from Asim: "and your strength will go" with the 'tā' and the jasm of the 'bā'. Isa ibn Umar read: "and it will go" with the 'yā' from below and the jasm of "it will go". Abu Haywah read: "and it will go" with the 'yā' from below and the accusative of the 'bā'. It was narrated by Aban and 'Ismah from Asim, and the majority agree that the 'strength' here is metaphorical and what is meant by it is victory and power, as you say: "the strength belongs to so-and-so" if he is dominant in a matter. From this meaning is the saying of the poet, Ubaid ibn al-Abras: 'As we protected you on the day of the flood from the shore, and the favor is for the people from strength and from number.'

Mujahid said: The wind is victory and strength. The wind of the companions of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, went away when they disputed with him on the day of Uhud. Zayd ibn Ali said: "And your wind shall go away" means: the terror from the hearts of your enemies.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

This is good on the condition that the enemy knows about the dispute. If they do not know, then the strength of the disputants goes away and they will be defeated. The poet of the Ansar said:

They have accustomed them to their blades that they would have the wind of battle and the spoils of those who met.

And from the metaphor of the wind is the saying of another:

When your winds blow, take advantage of them. For every storm has a calm.

This is often used. Ibn Zayd and others said: The wind is at its door. It has been narrated that victory has never been except by a wind that blows and strikes the faces of the disbelievers. Some of them relied on his saying, blessings and peace be upon him: "I was aided by the east wind." Al-Hakam said: "And your wind shall go away" means: the east wind, by which is the victory of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and his nation.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

This was specifically in the Battle of the Trench. His saying: "And be patient" until the end of the verse is a completion of the advice and a comforting promise. His saying, the Exalted, "And do not be like those who went out from their homes" is a verse that includes a reproach against those referred to, who are the disbelievers of Quraysh. This is based on the prohibition of following their path, and the reference is to the disbelievers of Quraysh by consensus. Arrogance is being boastful and ungrateful for blessings, and being preoccupied with merriment in it instead of thanking for it. Hypocrisy is boasting and pretending with what others see in you, and it is an action from: ra'a, to show off, its hamzah has been softened. It has been narrated that Abu Sufyan when he felt that his camel had surpassed the fear of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and his companions, sent to Quraysh and said: "Indeed, Allah has secured your caravan that you went out to support, so return safely, you have reached your goal." The opinion of the group was in favor of that. Abu Jahl said: By Allah, we will not do so until we reach Badr - and Badr was a market among the markets of the Arabs that had a day of festival - so we can slaughter camels there, drink wine, and the singers will perform for us, and the Arabs will hear of us, and people will fear us.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

This is the meaning of His saying, the Exalted: "And for the show of people." For this reason, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "O Allah, indeed Quraysh has come with its pride and arrogance, opposing You and denying Your Messenger. O Allah, so grant them defeat this morning." Muhammad ibn Kab al-Qurazi said: Quraysh went out with singers and drums.

His saying, the Exalted: "And they hinder from the path of Allah" means: others.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

Because they are more deserving of that than to limit their hindrance to themselves. His saying: "And Allah is All-Encompassing of what they do" is a verse that includes a warning and a threat to those who remain of the disbelievers, and the enforcement of destiny upon those who have passed away by killing.
