Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' The Exalted said: "Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to obstruct from the path of Allah. So they will spend it, then it will be a regret for them, then they will be defeated. And those who disbelieve will be gathered to Hell." Some of the narrators, among them Ibn Abza, Ibn Jubair, Al-Suddi, and Mujahid, said: The reason for the revelation of this verse is that Abu Sufyan spent forty uqiyyas of gold or something like that in the Battle of Uhud on the Ahabeesh and others. This verse was revealed regarding that. Ibn Shihab, Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hayan, Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatada, and Al-Husayn ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Amr ibn Sa'd ibn Mu'adh said: When those who were killed at Badr were killed, their sons and relatives gathered and said to those whose wealth was safe in the caravan: Indeed, Muhammad has harmed us as you see, but help us with this wealth that was the cause of the incident, perhaps we may take revenge from him. So they did, and the verse was revealed regarding that. The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: According to both statements, the wealth was spent in the Battle of Uhud. Allah, the Exalted, informed in this verse with a statement that is general regarding the disbelievers, and the indication is to specific ones that they spend their wealth intending by that to obstruct from the path of Allah and to push against the heart of Islam. Then He informed with a specific news regarding them that they will spend it, then it will be a regret for them, as their intention will not be fulfilled and the wealth will go to waste. Regret is the longing for what is lost, and it is possible that the regret will be on the Day of Resurrection, but the first is more apparent, even if the regret of the Day of Resurrection is constant upon them. This is from the news of the Qur'an about the unseen, as it informed of what will happen before it occurs, and it was as He informed. Ibn Salam said: Allah, the Exalted, clarified that they will be defeated before they fight for a year, as reported by Al-Zahrawi. Then He informed, the Exalted, about the disbelievers that they will be gathered to Hell. Gathering is the assembly of people and animals to other than that which is gathered and brought. Among it is His saying, blessed and exalted is He: "And We gathered upon them everything in front" [Al-An'am: 111]. And among it in the interpretation is that the quail was a bird that was gathered by the south wind for the Children of Israel, and the people whom Abu Sufyan brought and spent the wealth on them are the Ahabeesh from Kinana. And Ka'b ibn Malik says about them: (p-187) We came to a wave from the sea, amidst it are Ahabeesh, some bare-headed and some covered. Three thousand, and we are a small group, three hundred if we increase, then four. And Al-Dahhak and others said: This verse was revealed regarding the spending of the polytheists going out to Badr, who used to slaughter ten camels one day and nine the next.
