Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿And He will provide you with wealth and children and make for you gardens and make for you rivers﴾ ﴿What is the matter with you that you do not hope for Allah's majesty?﴾ ﴿And He created you in stages﴾ ﴿Have you not seen how Allah created seven heavens in layers?﴾ ﴿And He made the moon in them a light and made the sun a lamp﴾ ﴿And Allah caused you to grow from the earth as a plant﴾ ﴿Then He will return you into it and bring you forth a bringing forth﴾ ﴿And Allah made for you the earth a carpet﴾ ﴿So that you may traverse therein paths that are wide﴾
He promised them with wealth, children, gardens, and rivers due to their love for this world. The people differed in the meaning of His saying, the Exalted, as a narration from Noah, peace be upon him: ﴿What is the matter with you that you do not hope for Allah's majesty?﴾ Abu Ubaidah and others said: Its meaning is: You fear. From it is the saying of Al-Hudhali:
If the bee stings him, he does not fear its sting And he opposes it in the house of the workers
They said: And " , "majesty" : "greatness" , "authority." : "So the speech - on this - is a warning and a fright." , "Some scholars said: " : "You hope" , "in its original meaning of hope, as if he said: What is the matter with you that you do not make your hope for Allah, the Exalted, and for His meeting, and " : "majesty" , "and it could be - on this interpretation - from them, as if he (p-419) is saying: It is a quality from you and a stability in consideration; for disbelief implies lightness, recklessness, and rashness. And His saying, the Exalted: ﴿And He created you in stages﴾, Ibn Abbas and Mujahid said: It is a reference to the stages that a human goes through in the womb of his mother, from the sperm drop, the clinging clot, and the chewed lump. And a group from the people of interpretation said: It is a reference to the lesson in the differences of the colors of people, their creation, and their religions. And " : "stages" , "are the differing states, and from it is the saying of Al-Nabighah:
So if he recovers, his blindness has flown away And a man creates a stage after stages
And the majority read: " : "Have you not seen" , "with the 'ta', and a group read with the 'ya' in the form of the absent. And " : "layers" , "it was said: It is a source, meaning: in accordance, He made each one a layer for the other, similar to the saying of Imru' al-Qais:
........... He layered the earth, seeking and turning
And it was said it is the plural of " : "layer" , "and it is an adjective for " : "heavens." , "And Ibn Abi Abla read " : "layers" , "with the genitive case as an adjective for " : "heavens." , "And His saying, the Exalted: And He made the moon in them a light, this is because the moon, as it is in one of them, is in all of them. It is narrated that the moon is in the lowest heaven. And Abdullah ibn Abbas and Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, may Allah be pleased with them, said: The sun and the moon are both directed towards the earth, and the approach of their light and their elevation in the sky, and this is what the term lamp necessitates. And it was said: The sun is in the fifth heaven, and it was said: In the fourth. And Abdullah ibn (p-420) Amr said: It is in the fourth in winter and in the seventh in summer.
And His saying, exalted is He: "He caused you to grow from the earth as a plant" is a metaphor, as Adam, peace be upon him, was taken from the earth and then all became plants from him. And His saying: "as a plant" is a source that runs contrary to the source, and the estimation is: 'so you grew as a plant.' And 'the return in it' is by being buried in it, which is the custom of humans. And 'the extraction' is the resurrection on the Day of Judgment for the standing of presentation and recompense.
And His saying, exalted is He: "a carpet" implies that the earth is a flat sphere. Believing in one of the two matters does not detract from the law in itself, unless a corrupt view is compounded upon the statement of it being spherical. As for believing it to be flat, this is the apparent meaning of the Book of Allah, exalted is He, and it is that from which no corruption can be attributed at all. Ibn Mujahid argued for the correctness of this by the water of the surrounding sea, saying: 'If the earth were spherical, the water would not settle upon it.' And 'the paths' are the ways, and 'the wide places' are the spacious.
