Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "And the weighing on that Day is the truth. So whoever's scales are heavy, those are the successful. And whoever's scales are light, those are the ones who have lost their souls because they were unjust to Our signs." (p-515) "And the weighing": the source of "weighing; he weighs"; and its raising is by beginning; and "the truth"; is its news; and "on that Day"; is an adverb standing with "the weighing"; and it is correct that "on that Day"; be the news of the beginning; and "the truth"; is an adjective for "the weighing"; and the estimation is: "the weighing is the truth, established; or evident on that Day"; and "on that Day"; refers to the Day of Resurrection and the separation between the creatures. The people have differed in the meaning of weighing and scales; a group said: Allah - glorified and exalted is He - intended to inform His servants that the reckoning and the examination; on the Day of Resurrection; is in the utmost of clarity; and the end of justice; so He likened that to weighing; and scales; as there is nothing that humans know that is more clear than it; thus it was borrowed for justice; and the clarity of the examination; the term "the weighing"; and "the scales"; as Abu Talib borrowed that in his saying: "By a scale of justice that does not diminish a barley grain; for he has a judge from himself who is not biased." This saying has been narrated from Mujahid; and Al-Dahhak; and others; and likewise, the terms heaviness; and lightness; were borrowed for the abundance of good deeds and their scarcity. The majority of the community said: Allah - glorified and exalted is He - intended to present to His servants on the Day of Resurrection the clarity of the examination; and the utmost of justice; by a matter they have known in this world; and their understandings have acknowledged it; for the scale of the Resurrection has a pillar and two pans; in the form of the scales of this world; Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman - may Allah be pleased with him - said: "The one with the scales on the Day of Resurrection is: Gabriel - peace be upon him"; and they said: this is what the Quran necessitated; and no examination has rejected it. Al-Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: and this saying is more correct than the first for several reasons; the first of which is that the apparent meanings of the Book of Allah - glorified and exalted is He - necessitate it; and the hadith of the Messenger - blessings and peace be upon him - speaks of it; from that is his saying - blessings and peace be upon him - to one of the companions when he said to him: O Messenger of Allah; where will I find you on the Day of Resurrection? He said: "Seek me at the basin; and if you do not find me, then at the scales"; and if the scales were not visible and tangible, the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - would not have referred to seeking at it; and another reason is that the examination in the scales; and the weighing; and the heaviness; and the lightness; associated with the reckoning; does not corrupt anything of it; nor does its correctness become invalid; and if the matter is thus; then why should we move from the reality of the term to its metaphor without a reason? A third reason is that the saying about the scales is from the beliefs of the Sharia that has only been known by hearing; and if we opened the door of metaphor in it, we would be overwhelmed by the sayings of the deniers; and the heretics; that the scales; and the path; and Paradise; and Hell; and the gathering; and similar matters; are merely terms intended for something other than the apparent.
The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: As for weight and lightness, the reports have confirmed that the records of good deeds and bad deeds are placed in the two scales. Allah, the Exalted, creates in the direction He wills weight and lightness, similar to how He created that in the body of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - at the time of the revelation descending upon him. In the authentic narration from Zayd ibn Thabit, he said: "I was writing until the verse ﴿غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَرَرِ﴾ [An-Nisa: 95] was revealed; and the thigh of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - was on my thigh until it nearly crushed my thigh." And in the narration, "He - blessings and peace be upon him - would kneel when revelation was sent to him while he was on his she-camel, due to the weight that occurred in him; and we must know that the weight that occurs with good deeds is indeed related to a body, for an attribute does not stand on an attribute. It is permissible for the weight to occur in the records; and this is the closest to conjecture. It is also permissible for it to occur in that, from the neighboring bodies to that state. Abu al-Ma'ali went to the occurrence of it in the records. And there have been reports about the scale from the Companions and the Followers regarding its length and its conditions, which have not been authenticated by the chain of narration; thus, we do not see a reason for elaborating on them. And Al-Hasan - in what has been narrated from him - said: It has reached me that for everyone on the Day of Resurrection there is a scale specific to him.
The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And this statement is rejected; and the people are contrary to it; for everyone has a weight that is specific to him; and the scale is one. And it has been narrated from Mujahid regarding His saying, ﴿ثَقُلَتْ مَوازِينُهُ﴾, that the scales are the good deeds themselves.
The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And the term "scales" has been gathered; for in the scale there are many weighed things; as if He intended to draw attention to them by using the plural form of "the scale."
And "the successful" in the language means those who attain their goal; those who succeed in their pursuit. From this is the saying of Ubaid:
I succeed in whatever I wish, for it may reach with weakness, and the clever may be deceived.
As for the poet's saying:
And the evening and the dawn, there is no success with it,
It has been said that it means "continuation."
The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And permanence is reaching one's aim; the two meanings are similar. And the weighing of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, the deeds of the servants - along with His knowledge of the details of things and their great matters - is akin to His recording their deeds in their scrolls; and His copying of that; and it is similar to His questioning, glorified and exalted is He, their limbs with testimony against them; establishing the proof; and clarifying it. It has been established in the Sharia that the word of Tawhid weighs the scale of whoever it is weighed against their deeds; and it is necessary. If someone were to say: How can the scales of the sinners from the believers in Tawhid be heavy; and they are deemed to have the ruling of success; then a group of them enters the Fire; and that is misery; without a doubt? A group said: Their deeds are weighed without Tawhid; so the good deeds become light; and they enter the Fire; then upon their extraction, Tawhid is weighed; so the good deeds become heavy; and they enter Paradise. Also, the knowledge of the sinner that he is not eternal is success; even if preceded by misery; in terms of discipline.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He, "And whoever's scales are light"; the meaning is: "Whoever's side of good deeds is light; then he has lost"; and "They have lost themselves"; meaning with destruction; and eternity in the Fire; and that is the ultimate loss. And His saying, glorified and exalted is He, "Because they were"; meaning as a recompense for that; as you say: "I honored you for what you honored me"; and "what" in this context is a source; and "the verses" here are the proofs; and the commands; and the prohibitions; and "they wrong themselves"; meaning they place it in other than its proper places; with disbelief; and denial.
