Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿Or were you amazed that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you, to warn you and that you may fear [Allah], and perhaps you will receive mercy?﴾ ﴿But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.﴾ This is an interrogative particle that has entered upon the conjunction 'wa'; and the interrogation here means confirmation and reproach. Their amazement that occurred was only in the sense of disbelief and impossibility; this is the apparent meaning from their story. And His saying - glorified and exalted is He - 'upon'; it is said that it means 'with'; and it is said that it is upon the omission of a genitive, its estimation being: 'upon the tongue of a man from among you.' Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: It is possible that the coming itself in this context is connected to 'upon'; for everything that comes from Allah - blessed and exalted is He - has the ruling of descent; so it is as if 'came to you' means 'descended'; thus it is appropriate to say: 'upon a man.' And the 'lam' in 'to warn you' is the lam of purpose; and His saying - glorified and exalted is He - 'and perhaps you will' is a hope based on the condition of Noah - peace be upon him - and his belief; for this news is indeed from the perspective of Noah - peace be upon him. And His saying - glorified and exalted is He - ﴿But they denied him﴾; Allah - glorified and exalted is He - informed that after His kindness towards them, they denied him; so Allah - glorified and exalted is He - saved him and the believers with him in the ship; and it is the 'fulk'; and 'fulk' is for both the plural and the singular; and it is not on the level of 'junub' and similar; but 'fulk' for the singular is broken on 'fulk' for all; thus the dammah of the fa in the singular is not the same as in the plural; and 'fulk' is a broken plural, like: 'asad' and 'usud'; and this is indicated by their saying in the dual: 'fulkan.' And in the tafsir: those who were with Noah - peace be upon him - in the ship were forty men - and it is said: eighty; and it is said: ten - they are his sons: 'Yafith', 'Sam', and 'Ham'. And in many books of hadith; for Al-Tirmidhi (p-593) and others: 'Indeed, all of creation now is from the descendants of Noah - peace be upon him.' And Al-Zuhri said in the book of Al-Naqqash: And in the Qur'an: ﴿The descendants of him whom We carried with Noah﴾ [Al-Isra: 3]. Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: It is possible that the rest of the ten or the forty - according to the disagreement - were descendants of Noah - peace be upon him - and from his progeny; thus the verse and the hadith may coincide; and it is possible that those who were in the ship, other than his sons, did not descend; and this has been narrated - otherwise there would be a contradiction between the hadith and the verse. And His saying - glorified and exalted is He - ﴿They denied Our signs﴾; implies that Noah - peace be upon him - had signs and miracles.
And His saying: "Ameen"; its weight is "Fa'een"; and it is the plural of "Amm"; its weight is "Fa'"; and he means: the blindness of insight; and it has been narrated from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them - that Noah - peace be upon him - was sent after forty years; Ibn al-Kalbi said: after Adam - peace be upon him - by eight hundred years; and he came with the prohibition of daughters; and sisters; and mothers; and aunts; and maternal aunts; and paternal aunts; and Wahb ibn Munabbih said: Noah was sent when he was four hundred years old; and it is said: he was sent when he was three hundred years old; and it is said: when he was fifty years old; and it has been narrated that he lived after the flood for sixty years; and it has been narrated that the flood occurred in the year one thousand and six hundred of his age - blessings and peace be upon him -; and it has come in the hadith of intercession; and others; that Noah - peace be upon him - was the first prophet sent to the people; and it has also come that Idris - peace be upon him - was before Noah - peace be upon him -; and from his ancestors; and this is gathered by the fact that the mission of Noah is well-known for the reform of the people; and his carrying them with punishment; and destruction; for the sake of faith; so the intended meaning is that he was the first prophet sent with this characteristic.
