Commentary
His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "Are these those whom you swore that Allah would not grant them mercy? Enter Paradise; there is no fear upon you, nor shall you grieve." "And the companions of the Fire called to the companions of Paradise, 'Pour upon us some water or from what Allah has provided you.' They said, 'Indeed, Allah has forbidden both to the disbelievers.'" "Those who have taken their religion as distraction and amusement, and whom the worldly life has deceived. So today We will forget them as they forgot the meeting of their day, and they used to deny Our signs." "And We certainly brought them a Book which We detailed by knowledge, as guidance and mercy for a people who believe." Abu Mijlaz said: The people of Al-A'raf are the angels; and they are the ones saying: "Are these"; indicating the people of Paradise. Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: Likewise, the saying of those who said: The people of Al-A'raf are prophets and martyrs comes. Others said: The people of Al-A'raf are sinful humans; and His saying - blessed and exalted is He -: "Are these"; is from the words of an angel by the command of Allah - glorified and exalted is He -; indicating the people of Al-A'raf; and addressing the people of the Fire; and this is the saying of Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with him and his father -; and Al-Naqqash said: When they were reprimanded by His saying: "Your gathering did not avail you" [Al-A'raf: 48]; the people of the Fire swore that the people of Al-A'raf would enter the Fire with them; so the angels called them: "Are these...?"; then they called the companions of Al-A'raf: "Enter Paradise"; and some of the interpreters said: The indication by "these" is to the people of Paradise; and the addressed ones are the people of Al-A'raf; and those who were addressed are the people of the Fire; and the meaning is: "Are these the weak ones in the world whom you swore that Allah - the Exalted - would not care about? They were told: Enter (p-574) Paradise"; and it has been previously mentioned what Al-Naqqash said about the oath being in the Hereafter upon the people of Al-A'raf. Al-Hasan and Ibn Hurmuz read: "Enter Paradise"; with the opening of the 'alif' and the breaking of the 'kha'; meaning: "Enter yourselves"; or that it is an address to the angels; then the address returns afterward to the humans in "upon you"; and Ikrimah, the freedman of Ibn Abbas, read: "They entered Paradise"; as a report of a past action; and Talhah ibn Musarif, Ibn Wathab, and Al-Nakha'i read: "Let them enter Paradise"; as a news built for the passive voice. Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: The arrangement of each reading of these according to the sayings about the speaker and the addressed one in His saying - the Exalted - "Are these"; is possible with the easiest understanding; so I have summarized it for brevity; and likewise what is in the verse from the return from addressing one group to addressing another.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿There is no fear upon you, nor shall you grieve﴾; its meaning is: "You will not fear what comes; nor will you grieve over what has passed"; and Al-Tabari mentioned; through Hudhayfah; that the people of Al-A'raf desire intercession; so they come to Adam and he directs them to Nuh; then the prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - push them until they come to Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - to intercede for them; so he intercedes and they enter Paradise and are thrown into the river of life; they are made white; and they are called "the poor of Paradise"; Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, said: I wish I were among the people of Al-A'raf.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿And the companions of the Fire called to the companions of Paradise﴾; the verse; the term of calling implies that the people of the Fire have knowledge that the people of Paradise hear their call; and it is possible that this occurs while they see them with a perception that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, grants them from the distance of the low to the high; and it is possible that this occurs while there is a barrier and a veil mentioned previously; and it has been narrated that this calling is when the people of Paradise become aware of them; and "that" in His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿that pour forth﴾; is an explanation; meaning "that".
And "the water poured"; if it flows; and it spills; and someone else pours it; and His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿Or from what Allah has provided you﴾; is a reference to food; as said by Al-Suddi; so the people of Paradise say to them: "Indeed, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has forbidden the food and drink of Paradise to the disbelievers."
Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And the most disgraceful for the disbelievers in this statement is that some of them see one another; for it is more humiliating and more painful for the soul; and the response of the people of Paradise with this ruling is by the command of Allah - blessed and exalted is He -; and Al-Zahrawi mentioned that it has been narrated from the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - that he said: "The best charity is with water"; meaning: when in need of it; for it is the most pleasant drink and the most refreshing for the soul; and Al-Sha'bi asked Al-Mas'ud; so he said to him: Which drinks do you prefer? He said: The easiest to find; and the most precious when lost; so Al-Mas'ud said to him: O boy; bring water.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿Those who have taken their religion as play and amusement﴾; the verse; the religion is attributed to them in that they accept to adhere to it; for it is the religion of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, in that He commanded it; and the religion of all people in that they were commanded by it. ﴿And the life of this world has deceived them﴾; it is possible that this is from the speech of the people of Paradise; and it could be the beginning of the speech of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, from His saying: "So today"; and it is possible that the speech is from the very beginning of the speech of Allah - the Mighty and Majestic -; and the meaning of His saying, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿They have taken their religion as play﴾; means: by turning away and mocking those who call them to Islam; ﴿And the life of this world has deceived them﴾; meaning: it has deceived them with its adornment; and their belief that it is the ultimate goal; and it is possible that the term is from "Al-Ghurr"; which is a mouthful; meaning: it has satisfied them and made them arrogant.
As for His saying: ﴿So today We will forget them﴾; it is from the informing of Allah - Exalted and Majestic - about what will be done with them. Forgetting in this verse means leaving; that is, We will leave them in torment, just as they left looking forward to meeting this day. This was said by Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with him and his father - and a group of the interpreters. Qatadah said: They were forgotten from good, but they were not forgotten from evil. And if forgetting is understood as being oblivious from the disbelievers, it is in the context of mentioning Allah - Exalted and Mighty - naming the punishment by the name of the sin. And His saying - Exalted is He - ﴿And they were not﴾; is connected to ", "as they forgot﴾; and it is possible that the second " : "is considered additional; and His saying - Exalted is He - " , "was connected to His saying: " : "they forgot." , "And indeed We brought them a Book﴾; the verse mentions the excuses to them, following the mention of what will be done with them. The " : "in His saying - Glorified is He - " , "is a letter of emphasis; and the pronoun in " : "refers to the one previously mentioned. Yahya ibn Salam said: The speech has been completed in " , "and this pronoun refers to the deniers of Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - beginning another speech; and the intended meaning of the Book is the Noble Qur'an. , " : "It is possible that it is a generic name for all the revealed books, according to the interpretation of those who see the pronoun in " , "referring to the one previously mentioned. The majority of people read: ﴿We detailed it﴾ from the detailing of the verses and their clarification; and Ibn Muhaisin read: " : "with a dotted ض; and " , "means: with insight and deserving of that.
