Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And We removed what was in their breasts of grudges, rivers flowing beneath them. And they said, 'Praise be to Allah, who has guided us to this. And we would not have been guided if Allah had not guided us. Certainly, the messengers of our Lord came with the truth.' And it was called out to them, 'This is the Paradise you have been made to inherit for what you used to do.'﴾ This is a notification from Allah - glorified and exalted is He - that He purifies the hearts of the inhabitants of Paradise from grudges and malice. This is because the one who has grudges is tormented by them; and there is no torment in Paradise. It has been reported in the hadith: 'Grudge is at the gate of Paradise like the resting places of camels; Allah - blessed and exalted is He - has removed it from the hearts of the believers.' Abu Muhammad al-Qadi - may Allah have mercy on him - said: The meaning of this hadith - if taken literally - is that Allah - glorified and exalted is He - creates a substance; He places it where it can be seen like the resting places of camels; because grudge is an attribute that cannot exist by itself. And if it is said that this is a metaphor; and it is expressed [by it] as a removal from their souls; then these words are in the realm of representation; just as you say: 'So-and-so, when he enters upon the prince, leaves his pride at the door discarded.' So it has a point; and the first is more correct; and it aligns with the Shari'ah in many matters; like His saying - blessings and peace be upon him -: 'Death will be brought on the Day of Resurrection as if it were a ram; and it will be slaughtered.' And others besides that. Al-Hasan narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: 'By Allah, among us are the people of Badr, upon whom was revealed: ﴿And We removed what was in their breasts of grudges, brothers facing each other on thrones.﴾ [Al-Hijr: 47]' And it has also been reported from him that he said: 'By Allah, it was revealed about us: ﴿And We removed what was in their breasts of grudges.﴾' And Qatadah mentioned that Ali said: 'I hope that I and Uthman; and Talhah; and az-Zubair - may Allah be pleased with them - are among those whom Allah - exalted is He - mentioned in: ﴿And We removed what was in their breasts of grudges.﴾' Abu Muhammad al-Qadi - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And this is the correct meaning; for the verse is general regarding the people of Paradise; and 'grudge' is malice; and the hidden animosity in the soul; and its plural is 'ghilal'; and from it is 'ghulul'; which is taking in secrecy; and from it is 'inghilal in something'; and from it is 'the one who is entrusted with a secret'; and from it is the saying of Alqamah ibn Abadah: 'Like a staff of the shepherd, it is bound to it, a possessor of a share from the date pits, with a diacritical mark.' And His saying - exalted is He - ﴿rivers flowing beneath them﴾; is clear; for what is in contact with the ground is beneath what is upright reaching into the sky; and 'He has guided us' means: He has directed us; and the reference with 'this' is directed towards faith and the righteous deeds leading to entering Paradise; and it is possible that it refers to Paradise itself; that is: He has guided us to its paths; and for each of the two aspects there are examples in the Qur'an. Ibn 'Amir alone read: 'We would not have been guided' by dropping the waw from His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿'And we would not have been.'﴾ And likewise it is in the mushafs of the people of Ash-Sham; Abu Ali said: The reason for the dropping of the waw is that the speech is connected and related to what came before it.
And when they saw the confirmation of what the prophets brought from Allah - glorified and exalted is He - and they witnessed the fulfillment of the promises; they said: "Indeed, the messengers of our Lord have come with the truth"; so they judged that this is the truth judged by one who senses; and they were in this world judging that this is the truth judged by one who infers; and "And they were called"; meaning: "It was said to them with a shout"; and this calling is from Allah - Mighty and Majestic -; and "that" may be interpreted as explaining the meaning of the calling; meaning "that is"; and it may be interpreted as being a lighter form of the heavy; and in it is an implicit pronoun; its estimation is: "that is Paradise for you"; and similar to this is the saying of Al-A'sha:
In a group like the swords of India, they have known That every one who is barefoot and wears sandals is doomed.
Its estimation is: "that he is doomed"; and from it is the saying of another:
I confront him and I know that both of us Are eager for what has harmed his companion.
And "that is Paradise for you"; it is a beginning; and a description; and "you have been made to inherit it"; is the news; and "that is"; is a reference in which there is absence; either because they were promised it in this world; so the reference is to that; meaning: "that is this Paradise"; and "this" has been omitted; or it is before entering; or after entering; while they are gathered in a place of it; each one absent from his home.
And His saying - glorified and exalted is He - "for what you used to do"; is not in the sense of making it obligatory upon Allah - glorified and exalted is He -; but by the evidence of His mercy - glorified and exalted is He - and His encompassing; and the deeds are a sign from Allah - glorified and exalted is He -; and a way to the strength of hope; and entering Paradise is only by the mere mercy of Allah - glorified and exalted is He -; and the division in it is according to the extent of the deed; and "you have been made to inherit"; refers to the divisions.
And Ibn Kathir, Nafi', Asim, and Ibn Amer read: "you have been made to inherit it"; and likewise in "Az-Zukhruf"; and Abu Amr, Al-Kisai, and Hamzah read: "you have been made to inherit it"; with the merging of the thaa into the taa; and likewise in "Az-Zukhruf."
