Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And it is not the saying of a poet; little do you believe." "And nor is it the saying of a soothsayer; little do you remember." "It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds." "And if he had fabricated against us some of the sayings," "We would have seized him by the right hand." "Then we would have cut off his aorta." "So there is no one of you who could have prevented it." "And indeed, it is a reminder for the righteous." "And indeed, we know that among you are deniers." "And indeed, it is a regret for the disbelievers." "And indeed, it is the truth of certainty." "So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great."
Exalted is He, He negates that the Qur'an is from the saying of a poet, as Quraysh claimed. "Little" is established by an implied verb that indicates "you believe." And "what" may be negating, thus their belief is entirely negated. It may also be a source, describing either the belief or the number of those who believe as little. So, if their belief is described as little, it is linguistic belief; for they have believed in trivial matters that do not benefit them at all. They believed that the good, kinship, and chastity that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded were correct. Then, exalted is He, negated that the Qur'an is the saying of a soothsayer, as some of them claimed. Ibn Kathir, Ibn Amer, Al-Hasan, and Al-Jahdari read: "Little do they believe" and "Little do they remember" with a 'ya' in both. The others read with a 'ta' from above. Abu Amr preferred the reading of the 'ta' from above by his saying: "So there is no one of you." In the Mushaf of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, it is: "What do you remember" with two 'ta's. "It is a revelation" is raised by the beginning, meaning: it is a revelation. Then He informed that if Muhammad had fabricated anything against us, He would have punished him as mentioned. Fabrication is when a person says about another that he said something he did not do. Dhakwan and his son Muhammad read: "And if he says against us" with a 'ya' and a damma on the qaf. This reading is in contrast to what is stated by the reading of the majority, and the implication is clarified by His saying, exalted is He: "Against us some of the sayings."
And His saying, exalted is He: "We would have seized him by the right hand" has been differed in its meaning. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: "By the right hand" means with strength. Its meaning is: we would have punished him with strength from us, or the meaning could be: we would have taken away his strength. Others said: it is an expression of humiliation, as it is said to someone who is imprisoned or subjected to punishment: he has been taken by his hand and by his right.
And "the aorta" is the cord of the heart, as Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said. It is a thick vein that the knife of the slaughterer encounters. From it is the saying of Al-Shamakh:
If you reach me and carry my burden, O Arab, then let the blood of the aorta shine.
So the meaning of the verse is: we would have taken away his life immediately. And "the preventer" is the one who stops, and the plural of "preventers" is on the meaning of one; for it applies to the plural. An example of this is his saying, blessings and peace be upon him: "And the spoils were not lawful for anyone except the leaders before you."
The pronoun in His saying, 'And indeed, it is a reminder,' refers to the Qur'an. It is said that it refers to Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him. His saying, 'And indeed, We certainly know that among you are deniers,' is a warning. The fact that it is a source of regret for the disbelievers is due to their disbelief, as they see those who believe in it enjoying themselves while they are being punished.
And His saying, 'And indeed, it is the truth of certainty,' the Kufans went to the opinion that it is the addition of something to itself, like the house of the Hereafter and the mosque of the congregation. The Basrians and the skilled ones went to the opinion that the truth is added to the most eloquent of its aspects. Al-Mubarrid said: It is like saying, 'the eye of certainty' and 'the essence of certainty.'
Then Allah, glorified and exalted is He, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to glorify Him by His great name. This includes the continuation of his message, and proceeding to convey it and deliver it. It has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said when this verse was revealed: 'Include it in your bowing.' A group of scholars preferred adhering to this, while Malik disliked its obligation so that it would not be considered a mandatory duty.
The interpretation of Surah [Al-Haaqqa] has been completed, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
