Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿And Allah has struck a parable for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh when she said, 'My Lord, build for me a house with You in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people.'﴾ ﴿And Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, and We breathed into her from Our Spirit, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures, and was of the devout.﴾
The wife of Pharaoh is named 'Asiya. Her saying: 'and his deeds' means: and his disbelief and what he is upon of misguidance. This is the saying of all the commentators. A majority of the commentators said: Its meaning is: from his oppression, punishment, and torture of me. It has been narrated that Pharaoh's faith in Moses, peace be upon him, reached her, and that she loved to overcome. So he sent to her a group, and said: If you see anything from her, then crush her into the ground, and nail her hands and feet, and throw the greatest stone upon her. And if you do not see that, then she is my wife. So the people went, and when she sensed the evil from them, she called upon these supplications. So Allah took her soul, and placed that stone upon a person who had no soul in him. Other narrations have been reported that are lengthy, so I have summarized them due to their lack of authenticity. Others said - in the book of al-Naqqash -: 'and his deeds' is a metaphor for intercourse and cohabitation, and this is weak.
People have differed regarding the chastity that Mary, peace be upon her, guarded. The majority said: It is the chastity of the garment that was upon her, and that she was a young girl, and that Gabriel, peace be upon him, breathed into her from the opening of the garment. Some said: It is the chastity of the private parts. The term 'guarded' - if it refers to the private parts - is truly established. And chastity means protecting it, and therein she is used. If we consider it the chastity of the garment, then the term 'guarded' is borrowed in the sense that she protected it and preserved it, and in the sense that it became a passage for her child.
And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: 'So We breathed' is an expression of the action of Gabriel, peace be upon him, truly. And if someone claims that the breathing is the action of Allah, exalted is He, then it is an expression of His creation and invention of the child in her womb. This is likened to the breathing that is meant to move something gently and kindly. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: 'from Our Spirit' is the addition of a created being to the Creator, and a owned being to the Owner, just as you say: the house of Allah, the she-camel of Allah, and likewise the spirit, the entire essence is the spirit of Allah.
And the majority read: "And she believed" with a strong د (dal), while Abu Mijliz read it with a softened د (dal). The majority of the people read: "with words" in the plural, while Al-Jahdari read: "with a word" in the singular. As for the singular, it strengthens the possibility that he means the matter of Jesus, peace be upon him. It is also possible that he means that it is a generic name, which is the Torah. And whoever read in the plural strengthens that he means the Torah, and it is possible that he means the matter of Jesus, peace be upon him. Ibn Kathir, Ibn Amir, Hamzah, Al-Kisai, and Abu Bakr from Asim, and Nafi' read: "and His Book" in the singular. And Abu Amr, and Hafs from Asim, and Khairajah from Nafi' read: "and His Books" with a ضم (dhamma) on the ت (ta) in the plural. And Abu Raja read with a sukoon on the ت (ta): "and His Books." All of this refers to the Torah and the Gospel.
And "the قانِتُونَ": the worshippers, and the meaning is: they were from the people who were devoted in their worship and the state of their religion.
