Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' He, the Exalted, said: ﴿Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.﴾ ﴿Certainly, there has been for you in them a good example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever turns away, then indeed, Allah is the Free of Need, the Praiseworthy.﴾ ﴿Perhaps Allah will put between you and those to whom you have been hostile among them affection. And Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.﴾ (p-281) His saying, the Exalted: ﴿Our Lord, do not make us﴾, this verse is a narration from Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, and those with him. The meaning is: do not overpower them over us, so that we become a trial for them and a cause of their misguidance, as they cling to their disbelief and say: we have overpowered them because we are upon the truth and they are upon falsehood. This meaning was taken by Qatadah and Abu Majliz. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: do not empower them over us, so they may lead us astray from our religions. It is as if he said: do not make us misled, and he expressed that with the verbal noun. The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: this is the most preferred of the sayings because they only prayed for themselves. And in the manner of Qatadah, they prayed for the disbelievers. However, their intent was to repel the support of the disbelievers which causes the trials of the disbelievers. Thus, the meaning came with a profound expression. An example of this is the saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: “What a bad dead man is Sa'd” to the Jews; because they say: if Muhammad were a prophet, his companion would not have died. And His saying, the Exalted: ﴿Certainly, there has been for you﴾, this verse is an address to the nation of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him. And His saying, glorified and exalted is He:
