Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or says, 'It has been revealed to me,' when nothing has been revealed to him? And one who says, 'I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed.' And if you could see when the wrongdoers are in the pangs of death, and the angels extend their hands, 'Deliver your souls! Today you will be recompensed with a humiliating punishment for what you used to say against Allah untruthfully, and you were, regarding His verses, being arrogant.'﴾ These words are general; so whoever commits anything that falls under these words is included in the injustice that Allah has magnified by His saying: 'And who is more unjust'; meaning: 'No one is more unjust...' And Qatadah and others said: The intended meaning of these verses is Musaylimah; and Al-Aswad Al-Ansi; and they mentioned the vision of the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - of the two bracelets; and Al-Suddi said: The intended meaning is 'Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh Al-Amiri; and he used to write for the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - the revelation; and he was the foster brother of Uthman ibn Affan - may Allah be pleased with him. When the verse ﴿And certainly We created man from a product of wet earth﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 12] ﴿Then We made him a sperm-drop in a firm lodging﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 13] ﴿Then We created the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, then We created the clot into a lump, then We created the lump into bones, then We covered the bones with flesh. Then We developed out of it another creation﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 14]; Abdullah ibn Sa'd said - from himself -: ﴿So blessed is Allah, the best of creators﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 14]. The Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - said to him: 'Write it down; for thus it was revealed.' Abdullah then misunderstood and returned to Mecca as an apostate; and he said: 'I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed.' And it has also been narrated from him that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - would sometimes dictate to him: 'And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful'; and he changed it to: 'And Allah is Hearing and Knowing'; and the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: 'That is the same.' And similar to this. And 'Ikrimah said: The first part is about Musaylimah; and the latter part is about Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh; and Al-Zahrawi and Al-Mahdawi mentioned that the verse was revealed about Al-Nadr ibn Al-Harith; because he opposed the Qur'an with his saying: 'And the sowers sowing; and the bakers baking' and other such nonsense. Qadi Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: The interpreters have specified in these verses the mention of a people who may have been the causes of their revelation; and yet they encompass until the Day of Resurrection anyone who encounters anything from their meanings; like Tulayhah Al-Asadi and Al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubaid and others; and the majority read: ﴿I will reveal the like of what has been revealed﴾ with a lightening of the letters; and Abu Haywah read: 'I will reveal' with an opening of the noon and a doubling of the zay.
His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And if you could see when the wrongdoers﴾; the answer to "and if" is omitted; its meaning is: you would see something astonishing; or something terrifying; and something like this; and omitting this answer is more eloquent than stating it; because the listener, if the answer is not stated for him, is left with the utmost of his imagination; and "the wrongdoers" is a general term for anyone who has committed what has been previously mentioned; and other types of wrongdoing which is disbelief; and "the overwhelming calamities" is the plural of "ghamrah"; which is the overwhelming, bewildering affliction; and it is likened to the overwhelming of water; and from it is the saying of the poet:
And nothing saves from the overwhelming calamities except ∗∗∗ the cries of battle or fleeing.
"And the angels"; are the angels of taking the soul; and ﴿extending their hands﴾; is a metaphor for extending them with what is disliked; as He, the Most High, said - narrating about the sons of Adam -: ﴿If you extend your hand to kill me﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 28]; and this disliked thing is - without a doubt - the beginnings of punishment; and its signs; Ibn Abbas said: they strike their faces and their backs; and as for the extension for merely taking the soul, it is shared by the righteous and the disbelievers; and it is said that the intended meaning of extending the hands is in Hell; and the overwhelming calamities likewise; but they are not judged so that they die.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿Bring out your souls﴾; is a narration of what the angels say; and the meaning is: "they say, bring out your souls"; and the angels' saying may mean: "bring out your souls from these calamities; and trials; and save them; if what you claimed was true in the world"; and in that is a reprimand; and a stopping at their previous vile actions; Al-Hasan said: this reprimand - in this context - is in Hell; and it may be that this is in the sense of rebuke; and humiliation; as a man says to someone he has power over regarding something: "do such and such"; for that matter which he addresses him with in the sense of humiliation; and instilling fear in him.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿Today you will be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation﴾; this is a narration of the angels' words to the disbelievers at the time of taking their souls; and "the humiliation" is humiliation; and from it is the saying of the one with the finger:
Turn away from me, for my mother is not a shepherdess ∗∗∗ tending the pregnant and I do not overlook the humiliation.
And Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and Ikrimah read: "the punishment of humiliation" with an alif.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿You say about Allah what is not true﴾; is a comprehensive term for every type of disbelief; but it appears from it; and from His saying: ﴿And you were arrogant towards His signs﴾; an allusion to those whose mention is close to these who claimed revelation; and that they would bring down something like what Allah, the Most High, has revealed; for indeed, these are clear actions in which there is a saying of falsehood about Allah, the Most High; and it is clear in it the arrogance.
