81How can I fear that which you associate with Him, while you do not fear (the evil fate of) your having associated with Allah something for which He did not send down to you any authority? Now, which of the two parties has more right to be in peace? (Tell me) if you know. 82Those who have believed and have not mixed their faith with injustice are the ones who deserve peace, and it is they who are on the right path. 83That is the decisive argument from Us that We gave to Ibrāhīm against his people. We raise in ranks whomsoever We will. Surely, your Lord is Wise, Knowing.

Commentary

'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And how should I fear what you have associated with Allah, while you do not fear that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties is more deserving of security, if you should know?﴾ ﴿Indeed, those who have believed and not mixed their belief with injustice - those are the ones for whom there is security, and they are rightly guided.﴾ ﴿And this is Our proof which We gave to Ibrahim against his people. We raise in degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.﴾ This verse - up to " , "if you should know" : -1 ,

The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And this is the clear and eloquent explanation that relates to the meaning of the verse; and it arranges it well; and it is a report from Allah, glorified and exalted is He.

And "that"; is an indication of this previous argument; and it is a raising by beginning; and "our argument"; is its report; and "We gave it"; is in the position of the state; and it is permissible for "our argument"; to be a substitute for "that"; and "We gave it"; is the report of "and that"; and "Ibrahim"; is the object of "We gave"; and the pronoun is also an object of "We gave"; it is advanced; and "upon"; is related to His saying: "our argument"; and in that is much distinction; and it is permissible for "upon" to relate to "We gave it"; by meaning; as the meaning is: "We made it evident to Ibrahim over his people"; and similar to this.

And Nafi', Ibn Kathir, Abu Amr, and Ibn Amer read: "We raise the degrees of whom We will"; by adding the degrees to "whom"; and Amir, Asim, Hamza, and Al-Kisai read: "We raise degrees of whom We will".

The judge Abu Muhammad - may Allah have mercy on him - said: And they are two sources from the speech; and the intended meaning of both is one; and "degrees"; according to the reading of the one who added the tanween; is in the accusative case for the circumstantial; "Wise, Knowing"; are two attributes that are fitting for this position; as it is a position of will; and choice; and that requires knowledge; and precision; and the degrees originally pertain to bodies; then they are used in the ranks; and the moral standings.
