70Avoid those who have taken their faith as fun and games. The worldly life has deceived them. Preach with it (the Qur’ān), lest one should be seized for what he did, in a way that he should have neither a helper besides Allah, nor an intercessor. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "And leave those who have taken their religion as play and amusement, and whom the worldly life has deceived. And remind by it that a soul should not be given up for what it has earned. It will have no protector or intercessor besides Allah. And if it should offer every compensation, it would not be taken from it. Those are the ones who will be given up for what they have earned. For them is a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment for what they used to disbelieve." This is a command to abandon [them]; and that was according to the few followers of Islam at that time. Qatadah said: Then this was abrogated; and what followed it was fighting. And Mujahid said: The verse is merely for threatening and warning; it is like His saying, "Leave Me with the one I created alone" [Al-Muddathir: 11]; and there is no abrogation in it because it contains news; and it is the threat.
