'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And they made for Allah of what He created of crops and cattle a share, and they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners.' So what was for their partners does not reach Allah, and what was for Allah, it reaches their partners. Evil is what they judge.﴾ The pronoun in 'And they made' refers to the disbelievers of the Arabs who associate partners with their Lord; those whom the response was directed at from the beginning of the Surah. And 'ذَرَأ' means: 'created; and initiated; and spread in the earth'; it is said: 'Allah, the Exalted, created the creation; He creates them; creation; and creations'; meaning: 'He created them.' And His saying, 'And they made - of such and such - a share' implies the existence of another share; which is not included in the ruling of the first; so He clarified it by saying: 'And they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners.' Then He interrupted them during the saying by stating that this is a claim; and a fabrication; and 'claim' in much of the speech of the Arabs is closer to uncertainty and falsehood; it is said: 'claim' with the opening of the zay; and with it the group read; and 'fabrication' with the damma; and only al-Kisai read it this way in this verse; and 'claim' with the kasra; and I do not recall anyone who read it this way. And 'الْحَرْثُ' in this verse refers to crops and trees; and what is from the earth; and His saying, 'for our partners' refers to the idols and statues; and they called them 'partners' based on their belief that they share in good and evil; and they earn that for them. The reason for the revelation of this verse is that the Arabs used to make from their harvests; and crops; and fruits; and from their cattle; a portion that they called for Allah, the Exalted; and a portion that they called for their idols; and their custom was to give more to the share of the idols than to the share of Allah, the Exalted, as they believed that the idols had poverty; and that was not the case with Allah, the Exalted; so when they gathered the harvest, if the wind blew and carried from what was for Allah, the Exalted, to what was for their partners, they accepted it; and if it carried from what was for their partners to Allah, the Exalted, they returned it; and if water flowed from what they had made for Allah, the Exalted, into the share of their partners, they left it; and if the opposite happened, they blocked it; and if they did not obtain anything in the share of their partners, they said: 'The deities must have an expense'; so they would assign Allah's share in that; this meaning was mentioned by Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with him -; and Mujahid; and al-Suddi; and others: that they used to do this and similar actions; and likewise with the cattle; and they would eat Allah's share during a year of drought and avoid the share of their partners.
And His saying, exalted is He, "So it is not for their partners"; the verse; the majority of the interpreters said: What is meant by His saying, exalted is He, "So it does not reach"; and His saying, glorified and exalted is He, "It reaches"; is what we have mentioned regarding their protection of their share of their deities in the blowing of the wind and other than that. Ibn Zayd said: This is because they used to mention their deities when they slaughtered for Allah, exalted is He; and when they slaughtered for their deities, they did not mention Allah, exalted is He. So it is as if He said: "So it does not reach the mention of Allah, exalted is He"; and He said: "So it reaches the mention of their partners"; and "what"; is in the position of raising; as if He said: "Evil is what they judge"; and it is not directed in my view that "Evil" is treated here like "Good"; and "Wretched"; because the explained here is implied; and it is necessary to reveal it by agreement of the grammarians; and it is directed that it be treated like "Wretched"; in His saying, exalted is He, "Evil is the example of the people" [Al-A'raf: 177]; because the explained is evident in the speech.
