'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, says: "O you who have believed, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do." "And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. It is they who are the defiantly disobedient." "Not equal are the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise. The companions of Paradise, they are the successful." "If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought." This is a verse of admonition, reminder, and drawing closer to the Hereafter, and a warning from One who is not unaware of any hidden matter. The majority of people recite: "And let every soul look" with the lam being silent and the ra being in the jasm form based on the original lam of command. Yahya ibn al-Harith, Abu Haywah, and a group have also recited similarly, except that they broke it based on the original lam of command. Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan recited - as has been narrated from him -: "And let it look" with the ra being in the nasb form based on the lam of "so that," as if He, the Exalted, said: And We commanded with piety so that you may look, as if He, the Exalted, said: Fear Allah and let your piety be for you to look. His saying, the Exalted, "for tomorrow" refers to the Day of Resurrection. Qatadah said: Allah, the Exalted, has made the Resurrection close by making it like tomorrow, and that is because it is certainly coming, and everything that is coming is near. It is also possible that He, the Exalted, means by His saying: "for tomorrow" the Day of Death, for it is like tomorrow for every person. The meaning of the verse is: what you have put forth of deeds, and when a person looks at them, it increases the righteous deeds and stops him from the evil deeds. Mujahid and Ibn Zayd said: yesterday is this world and tomorrow is the Hereafter. The majority recited: "And do not be" with the ta from above addressing all those who have believed. Abu Haywah recited: "they be" with the ya from below, a metaphor for "the self" which is the name of the genus. And "those who forgot Allah" are the disbelievers, and the meaning is: they left Allah and became heedless of Him until they were like those who forget. And He, the Exalted, expressed what they were surrounded by of misguidance by saying: "so He made them forget themselves." He named their punishment by the name of their sin in some way, and this is also the recompense for sin upon sin, for they earned the forgetfulness of the direction of Allah, the Exalted. So Allah, the Exalted, punished them by making them forget themselves. Sufyan said: the meaning is: the share of their selves. And the wording of this verse gives that whoever knows his self and does not forget it knows his Lord, glorified and exalted is He. And Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Know yourself and you will know your Lord. It has been narrated from him that he also said: Whoever does not know his self does not know his Lord. Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, recited: "And not the companions of Paradise" with the addition of "not."

'And His saying, exalted is He: "If We had sent down this Qur'an"... is a reminder for mankind, or a condemnation of their morals in their heedlessness and turning away from the call of Allah, exalted is He. This is because the Qur'an was sent down upon them, and they understood it but turned away from it. If it had been sent down upon a mountain, and the mountain had understood from it what the human being understands, it would have humbled itself and become dust out of the fear of Allah, blessed and exalted is He. If the mountain, despite its greatness and strength, does this, what then should the son of Adam do? Yet he turns away and repels, despite his insignificance and weakness. Allah, blessed and exalted is He, has set forth this example so that the wise may reflect upon it and their hearts may humble and soften. And Talhah ibn Musarif read: "mussaddi'an" by merging the ت into the ص.
