17Their riches and their children will never benefit them against Allah. They are the inmates of the Fire. They will live there forever, 18the Day Allah will raise all of them, and they will swear before Him as they swear before you, and will think that they have something to stand upon. Be assured that they are sheer liars. 19The ShaiTān (Satan) has prevailed upon them; so he has made them neglect to remember Allah. They are the party of ShaiTān . Be assured that it is (the members of the) party of ShaiTān that are the losers. 20Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, they are among the lowest. 21Allah has written (in His pre-destined decree), “I will certainly prevail, both I and My messengers.” Surely Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.

Commentary

His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Their wealth and their children will not avail them anything against Allah. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever." "On the Day Allah will resurrect them all, they will swear to Him as they swear to you, and they will think they have something. Indeed, they are the liars." "The devil has gained mastery over them and has made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of the devil. Indeed, the party of the devil are the losers." "Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, they will be among the lowest." "Allah has decreed: 'I will surely overcome, I and My messengers.' Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise." It has been narrated that the hypocrites boasted of their wealth and children and showed joy in that, so the verse was revealed informing that this will not avail them nor serve as a defense. The operative in His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "On the Day" and "companions" is based on the estimation of an action. And Allah, exalted and majestic is He, informed about them in this verse that they will have oaths on the Day of Resurrection before Allah, and it will be imagined to them, due to their ignorance, that it will benefit them and be accepted from them. And this is their reckoning, that they think they have something, meaning: they think they have an action, meaning: something beneficial for them. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said in the book of Al-Thalabi: (p-257) he said, blessings and peace be upon him: "A caller will call on the Day of Resurrection: 'Where are the adversaries of Allah?' Then the Qadariyyah will come with darkened faces and their eyes will be blue. They will say: 'We did not worship the sun, nor the moon, nor an idol, nor did we take besides You a god.' Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'They spoke the truth by Allah, but polytheism came to them from where they do not know.' Then he recited this verse." And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "The devil has gained mastery over them" means: he has taken control of them from every direction and has dominated their souls. This action is what has been used originally, for the analogy of the reasoning requires that it be said: "gained mastery." Al-Farra' narrated in the book of "Languages" that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, read: "gained mastery." And "oppose" means: they give the limit of actions and sayings. Some of the scholars of meanings said: it means: they will be in a limit other than the limit that Allah, blessed and exalted is He, has legislated. Then Allah, exalted and majestic is He, decreed for the opposer to be humiliated, and informed that He has decreed in what He has ordained of His decree and destiny in eternity that He will overcome, He and His messengers, all who oppose Allah and the messengers. Nafi' and Ibn Amer read: "and My messengers" with the opening of the 'ya', while the others read it with its being silent. Al-Hasan said: 'Allah, exalted and majestic is He, has never commanded a messenger to fight except that He has granted him victory by His might and honor, there is no Lord besides Him.' Others said: 'And whoever has not been commanded to fight is victorious by argument.'
