Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And certainly We warned them of Our grip, but they disputed concerning the warnings." "And certainly they attempted to seduce him regarding his guests, so We blinded their eyes. So taste My punishment and My warnings." "And certainly the punishment settled upon them in the morning." "So taste My punishment and My warnings." "And certainly We have made the Qur'an easy to remember, so is there any who will remember?" "And certainly the warnings came to the people of Pharaoh." "They denied all Our signs, so We seized them with a mighty, overpowering grip." "Are your disbelievers better than those, or do you have immunity in the scriptures?" "Or do they say, 'We are a united group, victorious'?" The meaning: And certainly Lot warned his people, and We seized them and punished them, meaning: Our punishment for them. And "they disputed" means: they doubted, and some of them led others into doubt by engaging in falsehood and misguidance. And "the warnings" is the plural of "warner," which is the source, and it is possible that "the warnings" here and in His saying, exalted is He: "The people of Lot denied the warnings" [Al-Qamar: 33] refers to the plural of "warner" which is the name of the doer. And "the guest" applies to one and all, and the mention of his guests and their stories has already been discussed comprehensively. And His saying, exalted is He: "So We blinded their eyes," Qatadah said: It is literal; Gabriel, peace be upon him, drew something from his wing over their eyes, and it became equal to their faces. Abu Ubaidah said: Blinded with skin like the face. And Ibn Abbas and Al-Dahhak said: It is a metaphor, and He only prevented their perception, so they entered the house and saw nothing, and that was made like blinding. And His saying, exalted is He: "in the morning" it was said: That was at sunrise. Ibn Muhaisin merged the د in ص from His saying, glorified is He: "And certainly We punished them in the morning," and the majority did not pronounce it clearly, and "in the morning" is indefinite here, and for that reason it was declined. And His saying, exalted is He: "So taste My punishment" it is possible that it is from the saying of Allah, exalted is He, to them, and it is possible that it is from the saying of the angels, and "My warnings" is the plural of the source, meaning: and the consequence of My warnings which you denied. And He, exalted is He, said: "settled" in the description of the punishment because nothing revealed it from them, but it was connected to their death, and they are during their death under the earth being punished while awaiting Hell, then that connects to the punishment of the Fire, so it is a matter that is connected and settled. And He repeated His saying, exalted is He: "So taste My punishment and My warnings" for emphasis and reproach, and Warsh narrated from Nafi: "and My warnings" with a ي. And "the people of Pharaoh" are his people and his followers, and from this is the saying of the poet: "So do not weep for a dead person after a dead person, for Ali and Abbas and the family of Abu Bakr are buried." He intends the Muslims in the burial of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and it is possible that by "the family of Pharaoh" he means his relatives according to the custom of family, and he specified them in mention because they are the pillars of the people and their leaders.
And His saying, exalted is He: "They denied Our signs" may mean the people of Pharaoh mentioned. We took them as such. He means by the pronoun that the drowning which occurred in the sea was by His might and power. And His saying: "Our signs" refers to the nine. Then He confirmed by saying: "all of them." It is possible that His saying, blessed and exalted is He: ﴿And indeed, the people of Pharaoh were warned﴾ is a complete statement. Then His saying, exalted is He: ﴿They denied Our signs (p-153) all of them﴾ the pronoun in "they denied" returns to all those mentioned from the nations. And all the signs come straightforward. And His saying, exalted is He: "So We seized them" likewise returns to all the mentioned nations.
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿Are your disbelievers better than those?﴾ is a verse... It is an address to Quraysh, placing them in a position of reproach. Is there a trait of wealth, or strength of bodies, or abundance, or intellect, or anything else that necessitates that you are better than those who are being punished when they denied? So is it hoped for you - by that favor - salvation from the punishment when you denied your Messenger? Or do you have in the Books of Allah, exalted is He, that have been revealed, an exemption from the punishment? This was said by Al-Dahhak, Ibn Zayd, and Ikrimah.
Then He, exalted is He, said to His Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him: Or do they all say confidently that we will be victorious by our strength in terms of admiration and engagement? They will be defeated, and their gathering will not benefit them. And Abu Haywah read: "Or do you say" with the 'taa' from above.
