وَتَرَكۡنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِيمَ ٣٧ ﴿37 وَفِي مُوسَىٰٓ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٖ ٣٨ ﴿38 فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكۡنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَٰحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٞ ٣٩ ﴿39 فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٞ ٤٠ ﴿40 وَفِي عَادٍ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلۡعَقِيمَ ٤١ ﴿41 مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَيۡءٍ أَتَتۡ عَلَيۡهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتۡهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ ٤٢ ﴿42 وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذۡ قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَمَتَّعُواْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ ٤٣ ﴿43 فَعَتَوۡاْ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ ٤٤ ﴿44
37And We left in this (event) a sign (of deterrence) for those who fear the painful punishment. 38And (We left a similar sign) in (the story of) Mūsā, when We sent him to Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) with a clear proof. 39So he turned away along with his chiefs and said, “ (Mūsā is) a magician or a madman!” 40So We seized him and his army, and cast them into the sea, as he was of culpable behaviour. 41And (a similar sign was left) in (the story of) ‘Ād, when We sent upon them the wind that was barren (from any benefit); 42it spared nothing it came upon, but rendered it like a stuff smashed by decay. 43And (a similar sign was left) in (the story of) Thamūd, when it was said to them, “Enjoy yourselves for a while.” 44Then they rebelled against the command of your Lord; so the thunderbolt (of divine punishment) seized them, while they were looking on.

And His saying, exalted and mighty is He: "And they were looking on" may imply: suddenly while they were seeing with their eyes their state. And this is the saying of Al-Tabari. And it may imply: while they were looking at that in those three days that they were informed of it and saw its signs in their changing colors. And this is the saying of Mujahid according to the progression of his interpretation, and their waiting for the punishment is more severe than the punishment.
