'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿And remember the favor of Allah upon you and His covenant which He made with you when you said, 'We hear and we obey.' And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.﴾ ﴿O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or your parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is Acquainted with what you do.﴾ The address in His saying: 'And remember' until the end of the verse is for the believers in Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him -; and 'the favor of Allah' is a general term that encompasses Islam; and the gathering of the word; and the honor of life; and the wealth of richness; and the goodness of the outcome; all of these are the favors of this religion; and the mentioned covenant is what occurred for the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - in the Pledge of Aqabah; and the Pledge of Ridwan; and in every instance where the people said: 'We hear and we obey.' This is the saying of Ibn Abbas; and Al-Suddi; and a group of the commentators; and Mujahid said: The mentioned covenant is what was taken from the souls when they were extracted from the back of Adam; and the first saying is more preferred and more suitable for the nature of the speech. Then Allah, the Exalted, commanded the believers to stand firm regularly in justice; which is fairness; and a similar statement has preceded in Surah An-Nisa; and a similar saying has preceded at the beginning of this Surah: ﴿And let not the hatred of a people prevent you from being just.﴾ And the remainder of the verse is clear and repetitive; and Allah is the Helper.
