'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book" [Al-Ma'idah: 15] "By which Allah guides whom He wills of His pleasure to the paths of peace and brings them out from darkness into light by His permission and guides them to a straight path" [Al-Ma'idah: 15] "Certainly, those who said, 'Indeed, Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary,' have disbelieved. Say, 'Who could possess anything against Allah if He intended to destroy the Messiah, the son of Mary, and his mother and everyone on the earth altogether? And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.'" His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "A light and a clear Book" [Al-Ma'idah: 15]; it is possible that he means Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him -; and the Qur'an; and this is the apparent meaning of the words; and it is possible that he means Moses - peace be upon him - and the Torah; meaning: "If you had truly followed it, you would have believed in Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him -; for it commands that and gives glad tidings of it; and 'Ubaid ibn 'Umayr, Al-Zuhri, Salam, Hamid, and Muslim ibn Jundub read: 'By Him' with the 'ha' being pronounced; where it occurs similarly. And 'following His pleasure' means: by earning, intention, and turning towards Him; and 'the paths' means: the ways; and the reading of 'His pleasure' can be with a pronounced 'ra' or with a broken 'ra'; and both are valid languages; and this has been mentioned previously; and Ibn Shihab and Al-Hasan ibn Abi Al-Hasan read: 'the paths' with the 'ba' being silent; and 'peace' in this verse may be a name from the names of Allah - blessed and exalted is He -; so the meaning is: 'the paths of Allah, the Most High, which He has commanded His servants and legislated for them'; and it may be a source, like 'salvation'; so the meaning is: 'the paths of safety and salvation from the Fire.' And His saying: "And He brings them out"; meaning those who follow His pleasure; the pronoun refers to 'who' not to its wording; and the darknesses: disbelief; and the light: faith. And His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "By His permission"; meaning: "He enables them to the sayings of faith and its actions; and He knows their actions for that; and their commitment to it; so this is the limit of permission: knowledge of the thing and enabling of it; and its explanation has preceded in Surah Al-Baqarah; and the straight path is the religion of Allah; and His oneness; and what is built upon it from His legislation. Then He informed - glorified and exalted is He - of the disbelief of the Christians who say that Allah is the Messiah; and this is a group from the Christians; and all of their sects - despite their differing statements - attribute to the Messiah - peace be upon him - a share of divinity; and the statement regarding the word 'the Messiah' has been mentioned in Surah Al-Imran.

Then He, the Exalted, responded to them with His saying to His Prophet: "Say, who has any power over Allah?" This means that there is no one who can oppose the will of Allah, the Exalted, in the Messiah, nor in anyone else. This is something that reason dictates, that whoever is subject to His will is not a god. Then He, blessed and exalted is He, affirmed His dominion over the heavens and the earth, and what is between them. The Messiah, peace be upon him, is among the least parts of the dominion of Allah, the Exalted. And His saying: "He creates what He wills" is an indication of His creation of the Messiah in the womb of Mary without a father; rather, it is a creation, like Adam, peace be upon him. And it has been previously mentioned in Al-Imran, the distinction between His saying in the story of Zakariya: "He does what He wills" [Al-Imran: 40], and in the story of Mary: "He creates what He wills." And His saying: "And Allah is capable of all things" has a general meaning, while its specifics exclude the essence, the attributes, and the impossibilities. And a thing in the language is that which exists.
