Commentary

His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿Jesus, son of Mary, said: O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from the heaven, to be for us a feast for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You. And provide for us, for You are the best of providers.﴾ ﴿Allah said: Indeed, I will send it down to you. But whoever of you disbelieves afterward, I will punish him with a punishment with which I will not punish anyone among the worlds.﴾ Allah, the Exalted, mentioned that Jesus answered them in the matter of the table; it is narrated that he wore a woolen robe and a woolen cloak, and he stood praying, weeping, and calling upon Allah. The people differed regarding the descent of the Table Spread. Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan and Mujahid said: When they heard the condition regarding the punishment of those who disbelieved, they sought exemption from it; thus, it did not descend. Mujahid said: It is like Allah, glorified and exalted is He, striking a lesson for the people so that they do not ask about these verses. The majority of the interpreters said: The Table Spread descended; then the narrations differed regarding how that occurred. Al-Sha'bi narrated from Abu Abdur-Rahman al-Sulami that the Table Spread descended with bread and fish. And Atiyyah said: The Table Spread is a fish containing the taste of every food. Ibn Abbas said: A table was laid before them with bread and fish; they would eat from it wherever they settled, whenever they wished. This was also said by Wahb ibn Munabbih. Is'haq ibn Abdullah said: The Table Spread descended with seven loaves and seven fish. He said: Some of them stole from it, so it was lifted. Ammar ibn Yasir said: They asked Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, for a Table Spread that would have food that does not run out; it was said to them: It will be established for you as long as you do not conceal or betray; if you do, you will be punished. He said: A day did not pass until they concealed and betrayed, so they were transformed into apes and pigs. Ibn Abbas - regarding the Table Spread as well - said: It was food that descended upon them wherever they settled. Ammar ibn Yasir said: The Table Spread descended with fruits from Paradise. Maysarah said: When the Table Spread was laid for the Children of Israel, hands differed over it with every food except for meat.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The people have elaborated on the stories of this Table Spread more than I have seen fit to summarize due to the lack of a chain of narration. Some said: It is not correct that the Table Spread should not be sent down; for Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informed that He would send it down.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This is not necessary; for the report is coupled with a condition that is included in His saying: 'So whoever disbelieves among you.' And what Al-Hasan said is permissible; however, the majority agree that it descended, and a group among them disbelieved, so Allah transformed them into pigs. This was said by Qatadah and others. Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with both of them, said: The most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection will be those who disbelieved among the companions of the Table Spread, the hypocrites, and the people of Pharaoh. It is mentioned that Sham'un, the head of the disciples, said to Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, when he saw the food of the Table Spread: O Spirit of Allah, is it from the food of this world or from the food of the Hereafter? Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Did Allah not forbid you from these questions? This food is not from the food of this world nor from the food of the Hereafter; rather, it is by the overwhelming power. Allah said to him: Be; and it was.' It was narrated that there were vegetables on the Table Spread, except for garlic, leeks, and onions. It was said that there were olives, dates, grains, and pomegranates on it.
