Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying, exalted is He: ﴿Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers, most of them do not understand.﴾ ﴿And if only they had been patient until you could come out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.﴾ ﴿O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.﴾ ﴿And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would surely be in difficulty. But Allah has endeared to you faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, disobedience, and sin. Those are the rightly guided.﴾ ﴿By grace from Allah and favor. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.﴾ His saying, exalted is He: ﴿Indeed, those who call you﴾ until His saying, exalted is He: ﴿" , "Forgiving and Merciful" : 1 , "was revealed concerning the delegation of Banu Tamim, where Al-Aqra' ibn Habis, Al-Zubairqan ibn Badar, Amr ibn Al-Ahtam, and others were present. This is because they came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and entered the mosque and approached the chambers of the Prophet's wives, which are nine. They called out without waiting, saying all together: 'O Muhammad, come out to us, O Muhammad, come out to us.' Their actions displayed rudeness and a lack of respect. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, waited for a while and then came out to them. Al-Aqra' ibn Habis said to him: 'O Muhammad, my praise is beautiful, and my blame is ugly.' The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, replied: 'Woe to you, that is with Allah, exalted is He.' The people gathered in the mosque, and their speaker stood up and gave a speech boasting. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded Thabit ibn Qais ibn Shamas, may Allah be pleased with him, to give a speech and mention Allah, exalted is He, and Islam, and he excelled over their speaker. Then their poet stood up and recited a boastful poem. Hassan ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up and boasted of Allah, exalted is He, and the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and of bravery, and he was more eloquent than their poet. Some of them said to each other: 'By Allah, this man is truly gifted; his speaker is more eloquent than our speaker, and his poet is more poetic than our poet.' Then this verse was revealed about them.' This is a summary of what has been reported in this verse, and it has been narrated by Musa ibn Aqabah from Abu Salamah from Al-Aqra' ibn Habis. In the Mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud, it is written: 'Most of them are the sons of Tamim who do not understand.' And 'the chambers' is the plural of 'chamber.' The majority of the reciters read: 'the chambers' with a dammah on the ha and the jim, while Abu Ja'far, the reciter alone, read: 'the chambers' with a fathah on the jim. And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿It would have been better for them﴾ means in reward with Allah, exalted is He, and in the ease of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in fulfilling their needs and his affection for them. All of this is good; undoubtedly, some of it was withdrawn due to their rudeness. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report﴾. The reason for it is that 'the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, sent Al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to Banu Al-Mustaliq as a collector of zakat.' It has been narrated that he was hostile to them, so he intended to harm them. He returned from part of his way and lied to them - this was said by Al-Dhahhak - and he said to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: 'They have prevented me from the zakat and expelled me and they have apostatized.' The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was angry with them and considered this matter, and he sent Khalid ibn Al-Walid to them. Their delegation came to him denying that, and it has been narrated from Umm Salamah and Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that when Al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah approached them, they came out to receive him. He saw them from a distance, so he was frightened of them, and he thought evil of them and turned back. He said what we have mentioned. It has been narrated that when he approached them, he was informed that they said: 'We will not give him the zakat and we will not give him.' So he acted based on the validity of this report and turned back, saying what we have mentioned. The verse was revealed for this reason, and Al-Walid - as mentioned by Mujahid and Qatadah - is the one referred to as the disobedient one. Al-Zahrawi reported that Umm Salamah said: 'It is Al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah.' Then it remains applicable to anyone who possesses this attribute throughout time. 'And disobedience' is to deviate from the path of truth, and it has varying degrees, all of which are a cause for suspicion of lying and a place for verification and clarification. The speakers have become accustomed to accepting the report of a single person based on what this verse implies; because it implies that if a non-disobedient person comes with a report, he should act accordingly. And this is not a strong argument, and this is not the place for discussion on the issue of the report of a single person. And the majority of the reciters read: 'So verify' from verification, while Hamzah, Al-Hasan, Ibn Waththab, Talhah, Al-A'mash, and 'Isa read: 'So establish.' And 'if' in His saying, exalted is He: 'that you strike' is an object for it, as if He, exalted is He, said: 'Out of fear that you strike.' Qatadah said: 'The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said when this verse was revealed:
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah﴾ is a reprimand for the liar and a warning for the disgraceful act. That is, let the liar think that Allah will expose him through the tongue of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him. Then He said: ﴿If He were to obey you in many matters, you would certainly suffer.﴾ That is, you would be in distress and perish. Al-'anat is hardship. That is, if He were to obey you, O believers, in many of what you see by your own efforts and your advancement before Him. And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿But Allah has made faith beloved to you﴾, as if He, exalted is He, said: But Allah has bestowed such and such. In that is enough and a matter for which you do not express gratitude. So do not advance in matters and be content with the blessings of Allah, exalted is He, upon you. And Allah, blessed and exalted, has made faith beloved and adorned it by creating in the hearts of the believers His love and beautifying it. Likewise, He has made disbelief, sin, and disobedience hateful. Al-Rumani narrated from Al-Hasan that he made faith beloved by what he described of the reward for it, and he disliked the three that oppose faith by what he described of the punishment for them. And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿Those are the rightly guided﴾ is a return from addressing to mentioning the unseen. As if He, exalted is He, said: And whoever does this and accepts it and is grateful for it, then those are the rightly guided.
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿A favor from Allah and a blessing﴾ is a source that is confirmed by itself, because what precedes it is in its meaning; for the making beloved and the beautifying is itself the favor. And the source may come confirming what preceded it if it is not the same as what preceded it, like your saying: Zayd truly came, and the like. And Al-Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, used to say: Allah, exalted is He, said to the companions of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him: ﴿And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah; if He were to obey you in many matters, you would certainly suffer.﴾ And you, by Allah, are the most foolish in opinion and the most reckless in your thoughts. Let a man suspect himself and let him take advice from the Book of Allah, blessed and exalted.
