34It will be said, “Today We will forget you, as you forgot facing this your day, and your abode is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers at all. 35That is because you took Allah’s verses as a laughing stock, and the worldly life deceived you.” So today they will neither be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to repent. 36So, to Allah belongs all praise, who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the worlds. 37And to Him belongs majesty in the heavens and the earth. And He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Commentary

His saying, exalted and glorious is He: "And it will be said, 'Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and you will have no helpers.'" "That is because you took the verses of Allah in mockery, and the worldly life deceived you. So today they will not be brought out from it, nor will they be asked to appease (Allah)." "To Allah belongs all praise, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds." "And to Him belongs the greatness in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." The meaning of "We will forget you" is: We will leave you as you left the meeting of this Day of yours. There was no preparation from you for it, nor did you make any arrangements. Thus, the punishment in this verse is named after the sin. And "the refuge" is the place where a person resides and spends most of his time or all of it. And "the verses of Allah" is a comprehensive term for the verses of the Qur'an and the evidence that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has set up for the servants to reflect upon. Most of the reciters read: "They will not be brought out" with a dammah on the dotted yā and a fatha on the rā. Hamzah, Al-Kisai, Ibn Wathab, Al-Amash, and Al-Hasan read: "They will not be brought out" by attributing the action to them with a fatha on the yā and a dammah on the rā. And "they will not be asked to appease" requires from them a return to a righteous deed. And His saying, exalted and glorious is He: "To Allah belongs all praise" until the end of the surah, is a praise of Him, glorified and exalted is He, and a confirmation of His divinity. In that, there is a breaking of the matter of idols and statues. And the reading of the people is: "Lord" in the genitive case in the three instances as an attribute. Ibn Muhaisin read it in the nominative case, meaning: He is a Lord. And "the greatness" is a form of exaggeration. And in the hadith: "Allah, glorified and exalted is He, says: 'Greatness is My cloak, and majesty is My garment. Whoever disputes with Me regarding either of them, I will break him.'" The interpretation of Surah Al-Jathiya is complete, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
