Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿So as for those who have believed and done righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the clear success.﴾ ﴿And as for those who have disbelieved, did not My verses used to be recited to you? And you were arrogant and were a people of criminals.﴾ ﴿And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is true and the Hour, there is no doubt about it,' you said, 'We do not know what the Hour is. We assume it is nothing but a conjecture, and we are not convinced.'﴾ ﴿And the evil of what they did became apparent to them, and there surrounded them what they used to ridicule.﴾
Allah, blessed and exalted is He, mentioned the state of the two groups of believers and disbelievers, and He paired them in mention to clarify the matter in the mind of the listener. For things become clear by mentioning their opposites alongside them. And success is attaining the desired goal.
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿And as for those who have disbelieved, did not...﴾ [there is something omitted]. The intended meaning is: 'And as for those who have disbelieved, it will be said to them: Did not...'. So, He omitted 'it will be said to them' for brevity, and the 'fa' (so) remains indicating the answer that 'as for' requires. Then He preceded it with the 'alif' of questioning, as the beginning of the saying in every case. And Allah, exalted is He, confronted the disbelievers with arrogance, for it is one of the worst traits.
Hamzah read alone: 'and the Hour' in the accusative, as an addition to His saying, exalted is He: ﴿the promise of Allah﴾. It was narrated from Abu Amr, and Isa, and Al-Amash. Ibn Mas'ud read: 'true and indeed the Hour, there is no doubt about it,' and likewise Al-Amash also read. The others read: 'and the Hour' in the nominative, and for that there are two opinions: one is that it is a beginning and a continuation, and the second is that it is an addition to the position of 'inna' and what it governs, for the intended meaning is: 'the promise of Allah is true.' Abu Ali said this in Al-Hujjah, and some grammarians said: it is not permissible to add to the position of 'inna' unless the governing agent that 'inna' negated remains. And likewise, it is in the position of the 'ba' in His saying:
؎ .................................. ∗∗∗ So we are neither mountains nor iron.
So when 'not' is negating, it is permissible to add to the position before the entry of the 'ba', and this perspective appears in the book of Sibawayh. However, we have mentioned what Abu Ali narrated, and he is the authority. And their saying: ﴿We assume it is nothing but a conjecture﴾ means: 'We assume after accepting your news nothing but conjecture, and it does not give us certainty.'
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿And the evil of what they did became apparent to them﴾... is a narration of the state of the Day of Resurrection, and 'surrounded' means: descended and encompassed, and it is used in the context of what is disliked. And in His saying, exalted is He: ﴿what they used to﴾, there is an omitted addition, the intended meaning of which is: the recompense for what they used to do, that is: the punishment for their mockery.
