(p-562) His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Those who have believed in Our verses and were Muslims. Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, being delighted." "Circulated among them are platters of gold and cups, and therein is what the souls desire and the eyes find pleasure, and you will abide therein eternally." "And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do." "For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat."

"Those" is an attribute of the servants in His saying, exalted is He: "O My servants," [Az-Zukhruf: 68]. Then He mentioned, exalted is He, His command to them to enter Paradise, they and their spouses. And "being delighted" means: you will enjoy and be happy. Al-Habrah and al-Hubur refer to happiness. And "the cups" are a type of vessels like pitchers, except that they have no spouts or handles.

Nafi', Ibn 'Amir, Hafs from 'Asim, Abu Ja'far, and Shaiba read: "what the souls desire" with the last letter 'h' being pronounced. Likewise, it is in the Mus'haf of Medina and the Mus'hafs of the Levant. The rest, and Abu Bakr from 'Asim, and the majority read: "what the soul desires" with the 'h' omitted. This omission in the connection due to the length of the saying is good, and this has occurred frequently in the revelation, like His saying, exalted is He: "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?" [Al-Furqan: 41], and His saying, exalted is He: "And peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen" [An-Naml: 59], and others. In the Mus'haf of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, it is: "what the souls desire and the eyes find pleasure" with the 'h' in both.

And His saying, exalted is He: "You are made to inherit it for what you used to do" does not mean that the deeds obligated Allah to admit them to Paradise. Rather, the meaning is that their shares of it are according to their deeds. As for the very act of entering Paradise and being among its people, that is by the grace of Allah, exalted and majestic is He, and His guidance.
