Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "So for that, call and remain steadfast as you have been commanded, and do not follow their desires. And say, 'I have believed in what Allah has revealed of a Book, and I have been commanded to be just between you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. There is no argument between us and you. Allah will gather between us, and to Him is the final destination.'" And those who argue concerning Allah after the response has been given to him, their argument is invalid before their Lord, and upon them is wrath, and for them is a severe punishment." The 'lam' in His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "So for that," a group said: it is like 'to', as He, exalted is He, said: "Because your Lord has inspired it" [Al-Zalzalah: 5], meaning: to it. As if He said: 'So to what He commanded the Prophets of monotheism, call.' Another group said: rather it means 'for the sake of', as if He said: 'So for the sake of the matter being such and for it being such, you should call to your Lord and convey what you have been sent with.' And he, blessings and peace be upon him, was addressed with the command of steadfastness, and he, blessings and peace be upon him, was already steadfast, meaning: 'Continue in your steadfastness.' And this is the case for every commanded thing that one is already engaged in; its meaning is to remain. And this verse and similar ones were a clear directive for the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and it had a profound impact on his soul, I mean His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And remain steadfast as you have been commanded," because it encompasses all acts of obedience and the duties of Prophethood. In this meaning, he, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Surah Hud and its sisters have made my hair turn gray." It was said to him: 'Why is that?' He said: 'Because in it is: "So remain steadfast as you have been commanded" [Hud: 112]. And this address to him, blessings and peace be upon him, is according to his strength in the matter of Allah, exalted is He. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, said to his nation according to their weakness: "Be steadfast, and you will not be able to count it." And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And do not follow their desires," means: Quraysh in what they desired, that Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, should glorify their idols and other than that. Then He, blessed and exalted, commanded him to believe in the revealed Books before him from Allah, exalted is He, which is a command that encompasses all of his nation. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And I have been commanded to be just between you": a group said: the 'lam' in "to be just" means: that, because the intended meaning is: 'to be just between you.' Another group said: the meaning is: 'And I have been commanded with what I have been commanded with from conveying and legislation so that I may be just.' So he omitted from the speech what the apparent meaning indicates. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds," to the end of the verse, is abrogated in what it contains of reconciliation by the verse of the sword. And His saying: "There is no argument between us and you," means: there is no debate or discussion; the truth has become clear and you are being obstinate. And in His saying: "Allah will gather between us," is a warning.
And His saying, exalted is He: "And those who argue concerning Allah": Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and Mujahid said: It was revealed about a group from the Children of Israel who intended to turn people away from Islam and mislead them. They argued by saying: Our Book is before your Book, and our Prophet is before your Prophet, so our religion is better. Thus, the verse was revealed regarding that. It is said: Rather, it was revealed about Quraysh, because they always attempted this meaning and hoped to return to ignorance. And "argue concerning Allah" means: in the Oneness of Allah, that is, by way of nullification and denial and similar matters. The pronoun in: "after he has responded to him" can be understood to refer to Allah, exalted is He, that is, after he has entered into His religion. It can also be understood to refer to the religion and the law, and it can be understood to refer to Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him. And "dahida" means: vanishing. And "dahd" means: slipping, and the rest of the verse is clear.
