Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' He, exalted and glorified is He, said: "And if an incitement should come to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing." "And among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, who created them, if it is Him that you worship." "But if they are arrogant, then those who are with your Lord glorify Him by night and by day, and they do not grow weary." "And among His signs is that you see the earth humbled, but when We send down upon it water, it stirs and swells. Indeed, He who gives it life is the Giver of life to the dead. Indeed, He is over all things competent." [The word] [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: imā] is a condition, and the response to the condition is His saying, exalted is He: "[Then seek refuge]". And "the incitement" is the action of Satan in the heart or hand, from casting anger and malice or striking with the hand. From anger is this verse, and from malice is His saying, exalted is He: "Satan has incited between me and my brothers" [Yusuf: 100], and from striking is the saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "Let none of you point a weapon at his brother, lest Satan incite him in his hand, and he throw it into a pit of the fire." And Allah, exalted is He, in this preceding verse, urged to the noble morals of repelling with that which is best, then He praised those who meet it and promised them. And He knew that the nature of humans sometimes overcomes and stirs them to the fury of anger and the incitement of Satan. So He guided them to the remedy for that, which is seeking refuge in Him, exalted and glorified is He. Then He enumerated His signs for them to reflect upon, from turning away from monotheism, by mentioning the night and the day. Their mention includes what is in them of shortness and length, intertwining and equality in places, and all their lessons. Likewise, the sun and the moon include their wonders and the wisdom of Allah, exalted is He, in them, and He benefits His servants through them. Then He said, exalted is He: Do not prostrate to these creations, even if they benefit you; for the benefit from both is only by the decree of Allah over them. He is the one who should be prostrated to. And the pronoun in "who created them" has been said by a group to refer back to the days previously mentioned. And a group said: The pronoun refers back to the sun and the moon, and the two are plural. The plural of what does not have intellect is feminine, and for that reason He said: "who created them." The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: And from the perspective that it is said: suns and moons due to their difference in days, it is permissible for the pronoun to return collectively. And a group said: It refers back to the four mentioned. And the matter of the pronoun of what does not have intellect, if the number is less than ten, is that it comes this way. But if it increases, it is treated as a singular feminine. So you say: The branches have broken, and the trunks have broken. And from it is: "Indeed, the number of months" [At-Tawbah: 36] the verse, and from it is the saying of Hassan ibn Thabit: "And our swords drip with the blood of valor." And the saying of Samaw'al: "And there is no fault in us except that our swords are stained with the remnants of those who fought in battle." And this is a frequent matter, even if the matter may sometimes be intertwined with one another.
Then Allah, the Most High, addressed His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, with what includes their warning and the insignificance of their matter. And that Allah, the Most High, is not in need of their worship, by His saying: ﴿But if they are arrogant﴾. And His saying: ﴿Indeed, those who are with your Lord﴾ refers to the angels, who are standing in rows, glorifying Him. And "with" in this verse is not in the sense of a place, but rather it means status and closeness, as you say: Zayd is esteemed with the king, and in himself he is lofty. It is narrated that the glorification of the angels has become for them like the soul for the son of Adam, and "they do not grow weary" means: they do not become bored.
Then the Most High mentioned a verse that is established to be considered in the matter of resurrection from the graves. And it is inferred from what is witnessed of this to what has not yet been witnessed of that. It is a verse that every creature endowed with reason sees clearly. And "the earth's humility" is what appears on it from submission and desolation due to drought and the stillness of the poisons. It is frowning just as the humble is frowning, almost crying. And "the sent down water" is the rain, and "the shaking of the earth" is the disturbance of its parts due to the water and its cracking for the plants. And "its Lord" is its swelling with water and the rising of its surface because of it. The majority read: "and it swelled," and Abu Ja'far ibn al-Qaqa' read: "and it swelled" with an alif that is hamzated. And it was narrated by the mountains from Abu Amr, and it also means: it rose and elevated. And from it is the term rabiyyah, which refers to that which rises until it is observed by the people. Then the Most High reminded of the matter that should be compared to this verse and the lesson, which is the revival of the dead. And His saying: ﴿Indeed, He is capable of all things﴾ is general, and "thing" in the language means: that which exists.
