8As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them there is a reward that will never be interrupted. 9Say, “Do you really disbelieve in the One who has created the earth in two days, and ascribe to Him partners? That is the Lord of the worlds. 10He has placed firm mountains in it (the earth) towering above it, and put blessings in it, and proportioned its foods therein, in four days, equal for those who ask.

Commentary

His saying, exalted and glorified is He: "Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds, for them is a reward uninterrupted." "Say, do you indeed disbelieve in the One who created the earth in two days and make for Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds." "And He placed in it firm mountains from above it and blessed it and determined therein its sustenance in four days, equal for those who ask."

He, exalted and glorified is He, mentioned the state of those who have believed, equating it with the state of the disbelievers mentioned, to clarify the difference. And His saying, the Most High: "uninterrupted," Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Its meaning is: not diminished. And a group said its meaning is: not cut off. It is said: I granted the rope, if I cut it. And Mujahid said: Its meaning is: not counted; it is prepared to be granted, and it appears in the verse that He described it as free from granting and harm, as it is from the side of Allah, exalted and glorified is He, so it is noble with no grant in it. And the gifts of humans are those which involve granting. And Al-Suddi said: This verse was revealed regarding the sick and the disabled. If they are unable to complete the acts of obedience, they are written for them the reward, like the most righteous of what they used to do.

Then Allah, the Most High, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to confront them with a rebuke for their disbelief in the Creator of the earth and the heavens and its inventor. He described the form of creation and its duration. The wisdom in creating these creations over an extended period, while Allah has the power to create them all at once, is to manifest His power in that according to the nobility of creation, first and foremost. Some said it is to teach His servants patience in matters and the timing. The saying has been mentioned several times in a manner similar to His words: [Are you]. The narrators of the hadith differed regarding the day on which Allah, the Most High, began the creation of the earth. It was narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and others, that 'the first day is Sunday, and Allah, the Most High, created the earth on it and on Monday. Then He created the mountains and similar things on Tuesday.' Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'From here it was said: it is a heavy day.' Then He created the trees, fruits, and rivers on Wednesday, and from here it was said: it is a day of rest and contemplation regarding that which was created on it. Then He created the heavens and what is in them on Thursday and Friday. In the last hour of Friday, He created Adam, peace be upon him. Al-Suddi said: 'Friday was named for the gathering of creations on it and their completeness.' This is a narration in which there are famous hadiths. Since He did not create anything on Saturday, the Children of Israel refrained from work on it. It is mentioned in a Muslim book that 'the first day Allah created the soil was Saturday. Then He arranged the creations over six days, and He made Friday devoid of creations, except for Adam alone.' The apparent meaning from the stories regarding the clay of Adam, peace be upon him, is that the Friday on which Adam was created had many days and Fridays preceding it. These days in which Allah created these creations are the first of the days, because with the creation of the earth, the heavens, and the sun, the day was established. It may be possible that Allah, the Most High, intended His saying: 'two days' in a hypothetical sense, even if the sun had not yet been created, as if the detailing of time indicates that they are Sunday and Monday as mentioned.

And 'the partners': are the counterparts and examples, and this refers to everything that was worshipped from angels, idols, and others. Al-Suddi said: 'They are equals among men who obey them.' And 'the mountains': are the fixed mountains. A mountain is said to be firm when it is stable. And His saying, the Most High: 'And He blessed it' means He made it fertile for good things and food, and He made it pure, among other aspects of blessing. In the reading of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: '[And He divided its sustenance],' and in the Mushaf of Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him: 'And He determined.'

And the people differed in the meaning of His saying, exalted is He: [its provisions]. Al-Suddi said: It is the provisions of humans and their sustenance, and he attributed it to the earth in terms of what is in it and from it. And Qatadah said: It is the provisions of the earth from the mountains, rivers, trees, rocks, minerals, and the things by which the earth is sustained and its benefits are derived. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated a raised hadith regarding this, and he likened it to the sustenance by which the life of animals is maintained. And Mujahid said: He meant its provisions from rain and water. And Ikrimah, Al-Dahhak, and Mujahid also said: What the Blessed and Exalted means by His saying: ﴿
