Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿And thus the word of your Lord has been justified against those who disbelieved that they are the companions of the Fire﴾ ﴿Those who carry the Throne and those around it glorify [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, saying, 'Our Lord, You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire﴾ ﴿Our Lord, and admit them to the Gardens of Eternity which You have promised them and whoever is righteous among their forefathers, their spouses, and their descendants. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise﴾ ﴿And protect them from evil, and whoever You protect from evil that Day, then You have certainly had mercy on him, and that is the great attainment﴾
And in the Mushaf of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: [Thus the word of your Lord has preceded], and the meaning is: Just as I took those mentioned and destroyed them, so the words of Mine have been justified against all disbelievers, those who preceded and those who came after, that they are the people of the Fire and its inhabitants. Nafi' and Ibn 'Amir read
And the majority of the people read: "Gardens of Eternity" in the plural form, and Al-A'mash read - in the narration of Al-Mufaddal -: "Garden of Eternity" in the singular form. This is also how it is in the Mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, and "Al-'Adn" means: the abode.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿And whoever is righteous among their forefathers, spouses, and offspring﴾. It has been narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubair, may Allah be pleased with him, in the interpretation of this: that a man enters Paradise before his relatives, and he says: Where is my father? Where is my mother? Where is my wife? They are joined to him due to their righteousness, and because of his calling out to them and seeking them. This is the supplication of the angels. And 'Isa ibn Umar read: "And their offspring" in the singular form.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿And protect them﴾. Its original form is: Awqihim, the waw was omitted following its omission in the future tense, and the alif of connection was dispensed with due to the movement of the qaf. Its meaning is: Make for them a protection that protects them from the evils. The wording may imply a supplication that Allah removes from them the punishment that follows from the evils, so in this wording - on this - there is an omission of a genitive, as if he said: And protect them from the recompense of the evils.
