Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿He is the One who shows you His signs and sends down for you from the heaven provision, and none remembers except he who turns back (to Allah).﴾ ﴿So invoke Allah, making religion sincere for Him. Even if the disbelievers dislike it.﴾ ﴿Exalted in degrees, Lord of the Throne, He sends the Spirit by His command upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.﴾ ﴿The Day they will emerge, nothing about them will be hidden from Allah. To whom belongs the dominion today? To Allah, the One, the Subduer.﴾ ﴿Today every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and there will be no injustice today. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.﴾
This is the beginning of a discourse on the meaning of the Oneness of Allah, exalted and majestic is He, and the clarification of its signs. The signs of Allah encompass the signs of His power, the signs of His Qur'an, and the evident miracles through the hands of His messengers. The sending down of provision refers to the sending down of rain and the sending down of decree and judgment, by which a person attains what he gains in trade and other matters. The majority of people read: "[and He sends down]" with lightening, while Al-Hasan, Al-A'raj, 'Isa, and a group read it with emphasis. His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And none remembers except he who turns back (to Allah).﴾ means that no one remembers in a way that is considered valid and beneficial for him; for we find those who do not turn back (to Allah) remembering, but since that is not beneficial, it is counted as if it did not happen.
And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿So invoke Allah, making religion sincere for Him.﴾ is an address to the believers, the companions of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and "invoke" means "worship."
And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿Exalted in degrees.﴾ It is possible that He means by degrees His high attributes, and He expressed it in a way that is close to the understanding of the listeners. It is also possible that He means: Exalted in the degrees that He grants to the believers and bestows upon His sincere servants in His Paradise. And "the Throne" is the greatest created body, in which the seven heavens and the earths are like coins in the vastness of the earth.
And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿He sends the Spirit.﴾ Al-Dahhak said: The Spirit here is the revelation and the Qur'an, and other than that which has not been recited. Qatadah and Al-Suddi said: The Spirit is prophethood and its status, as He said: ﴿A Spirit from Our command.﴾ [Ash-Shura: 52]. He named this a Spirit because it gives life to nations and times just as the body is given life by its spirit. It is also possible that the sending of the Spirit is general for all that Allah bestows upon His guided servants in understanding faith and the legal concepts. The implied subject - according to this interpretation - is Allah, exalted and majestic is He. Al-Zajjaj said: The Spirit is everything by which the lives of people are sustained, and every guided person is alive, while every misguided person is like the dead. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿By His command.﴾ If you consider it a genus for matters, then "by" indicates partitive, or for beginning of the goal. And if we consider the matter from the meaning of the speech, then "by" is either for beginning of the goal, or it means "by," and it is not for partitive at all.
And Ubayy ibn Ka'b read: "to warn" with a 'ya' and a broken dhāl. In the verb, there is a pronoun that could refer back to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, or to the spirit, or to "min" in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿Whoever wills from His servants﴾. Muhammad ibn al-Samīfa' al-Yamanī read: "to warn" with a 'ya' and an opened dhāl, and he joined the 'm' of "day". He made the day a warning in a broad sense. The majority of the people read: "to warn" with a 'ta' for addressing Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and "day" in the accusative. Abu 'Amr, Nafi', and a group read: "the meeting" without a 'ya'. Abu 'Amr also, and 'Isa, and Ya'qub read: "the meeting" with a 'ya'. The disagreement in it is like the disagreement that occurred in "the day of calling". Its meaning is: the meeting of all the scholars with one another, and that is a matter that did not occur before that day. Al-Suddi said: Its meaning is: the meeting of the people of the heavens and the people of the earth. It was said: Its meaning is: the meeting of people with their Creator. This last meaning is the most terrifying. It was said: A person meets his deeds.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿On the day they are exposed﴾ means: in an exposure from the earth that the sight penetrates them and the caller hears them. "Day" is in the accusative as a substitute for the first, so it is the accusative of the object. It is possible that it is in the accusative as a circumstance, and the acting in it is His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿Nothing is hidden﴾. It is a movement of inflection, not a movement of construction; because the circumstance is not constructed except if it is added to something that is not established, like "that day". And like the saying of the poet:
At the time I reproached old age for youth ∗∗∗ And I said: Did I not awaken while old age is a deterrent?
And like His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿This is a day when the truthful will benefit from their truth﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 119]. As for in this verse, the sentence is something established, as you say: "I came on a day when Zayd is the leader". So construction is not permissible, so reflect.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿Nothing is hidden from Allah of them﴾ means: from their inner selves and their secrets and the calls of their hearts. In the Mushaf of Ubayy ibn Ka'b: [Nothing is hidden from Him of them] with a pronoun replacing the written one.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿To whom belongs the dominion today﴾. It has been narrated that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, establishes this statement and the world is silent in awe and fear, then He answers Himself: ﴿To Allah, the One, the Subduer﴾. Al-Hasan said: He, glorified and exalted is He, is the questioner and the answerer. Ibn Mas'ud said: He, glorified and exalted is He, establishes and the world answers with that. It was said: A king calls out the statement and the people answer.
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And when the believer reflects that there is no power of a creature nor strength except by Allah, then all of time and the days of eternity, the dominion in them is only for Allah, the One, the Subduer. However, the manifestation of that for the disbelievers and the ignorant will become clear on the Day of Resurrection. And when he reflects on the subjugation of the inhabitants of the heavens and their worship and the enforcement of decree on the earth, what dominion is there for anyone other than Allah?
Then Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informs the people of the standing that it is the Day of recompense for deeds, both good and bad. This verse is a clear statement that reward and punishment are contingent upon the actions of the servant. It is a day when nothing will be placed in a manner other than its rightful place, and that is His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "There is no injustice today." Then He informed them about Himself with the swiftness of the reckoning. This is an expression of His encompassing knowledge of all things. He will hold the creatures accountable in one hour just as He provides for them, for He does not need counting or reflection, there is no Lord other than Him. It has been narrated that the Day of Resurrection will not be completed until the believers are admitted into Paradise and the disbelievers into Hell.
