'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying, the Exalted: "They hide from the people but they do not hide from Allah, and He is with them when they plot by night what does not please Him. And Allah is All-Encompassing of what they do." "Here you are, those who have argued on their behalf in the worldly life, but who will argue with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will be their protector?" "And whoever does evil or wrongs himself, then seeks forgiveness from Allah, will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful." The pronoun in "They hide" refers to the group committing sins, hiding from the people; boasting to them. This falls under the generality of this matter; and includes under these categories the people of treachery in the mentioned incident; and those who are biased in their favor; and those who plot against the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him -; and deceive him. It is possible that the pronoun refers to the people of this incident; and all who act like them fall under this reproach. The meaning of "And He is with them" is with encompassing knowledge and power; "and they plot" means they plan by night; the expression applies to all secrecy in this, as the night is a time of concealment and hiding. Al-Tabari said: "Some of the people claimed that plotting in their language means changing; and he quoted from Al-Aswad ibn 'Amir ibn Huwayn al-Tai: 'And you plotted my words at the night, may Allah kill you, O ungrateful servant.'" Abu Zayd said: "'They plot' means they compose; and it is possible that the term is derived from 'the house'; meaning they conceal their planning within the walls. And His saying, the Exalted: "Here you are, those"; the various readings of it have been mentioned in Surah Al-Imran; and the address in this verse is to the people who are biased towards the people of suspicion and sins; and included in this generality are the people of the incident; and it is possible that the address is to the biased people in this incident; and this is the more apparent to me, due to the emphasis with 'those'; and it is an indication to those present - and the parsing of such a verse has been previously mentioned in Surah Al-Imran. The argumentation is the defense with words; and it is from twisting and bending speech; as argumentation means twisting. And His saying, the Exalted: "But who will argue with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection" is a pure warning; meaning: Indeed, Allah knows the reality of the matter; so it is not possible to deceive Him with argumentation; nor with anything else; as you did with the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him -; as he is a human who judges based on what he hears. And when this warning was established; and minds concluded that there is no argument with Allah; nor a protector who will manage the affairs of the sinners before Him - this was followed by this great hope; and the wide respite with His saying, the Exalted: "And whoever does evil"; the verse; His saying: "or wrongs himself"; is a reference to committing evil; and they are of the same meaning; repeated with different wording for emphasis; and seeking forgiveness from Allah, the Exalted, with sincerity in that is repentance.
And His saying: ﴿He will find Allah﴾; is a metaphor; as mercy and forgiveness are prepared for those who seek forgiveness and repent; they are like those who find what they seek; and it is as if repentance is an arrival at the mercy of Allah; and a closeness to Allah. And Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said one day in his gathering: "When one of the Children of Israel committed a sin, he would wake up and the expiation for that sin would be written at his door; and if he were to urinate on any of his clothes, he would cut it with scissors; then a man from the people said: 'Indeed, Allah has given the Children of Israel goodness.' Abdullah said: 'What Allah has given you is better than what He gave them; He made water pure for you; and He said: ﴿And whoever does evil or wrongs himself﴾; the verse." And this is a verse of promise with the condition of will; according to what is required by the belief of the people of the Sunnah; and the grace of Allah is hoped for; and He is the One sought for help.
