Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And the earth shone with the light of its Lord, and the book was placed, and the prophets and the witnesses were brought forth, and it was judged between them with truth, and they were not wronged﴾ ﴿And every soul was fully compensated for what it earned, and He is most knowing of what they do﴾ ﴿And those who disbelieved were driven to Hell in groups, until when they arrived there, its gates were opened, and its keepers said to them, 'Did there not come to you messengers from among you reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?' They said, 'Yes, but the word of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers﴾ ﴿It was said, 'Enter the gates of Hell, to abide therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant﴾. The meaning of 'shone' is: it illuminated and its light became great. It is said: 'The sun shone' when it rose, and 'it shone' when it illuminated. Ibn Abbas and Ubayd ibn Umayr read: 'And it was illuminated' with the hamzah being pronounced and the ra' being broken. This is only applicable to a transitive verb, so it can be said: 'The house shone,' and 'the lamp illuminated it,' and the action can be transitive or intransitive with one word, like 'he returned' and 'I returned him,' and 'he stopped' and 'I stopped him.' Among the transitive forms of this is said: 'The earth was illuminated,' and 'the earth' in this verse refers to the earth that is replaced by the known earth. His saying: ﴿With the light of its Lord﴾ is an addition of a quality to the Creator, meaning: with the light of Allah, the Exalted. And 'the book' is the book of the reckoning of the creatures, and it was mentioned in the singular for the sake of the genus; for every individual has a separate book. A group said: 'The preserved tablet was placed.' This is odd, and it does not carry the meaning of warning, which is the intent of the verse. His saying: ﴿And the prophets were brought forth﴾ means: they were called as witnesses against their nations. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And the witnesses﴾ it was said: it is the plural of witness, and what is meant is the Ummah of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, whom Allah made witnesses over the people. Al-Suddi said: 'The witnesses' are those who are martyred in the way of Allah, and this also removes the meaning of warning, and it is possible that he means by his saying: 'and the witnesses' the prophets themselves, so it would be an addition of a description to a description with the conjunction 'and,' just as you say: 'Zayd the generous and the wise came.' Zayd ibn Aslam said: 'The witnesses' are the guardians. The pronoun in His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿Between them﴾ refers to all of creation, as the verse indicates them. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And they are not wronged﴾ means: nothing of their affairs is placed in a location other than its rightful place. His saying: ﴿And every soul was fully compensated for what it earned﴾ means: it was rewarded fully, and in this is a clear warning as indicated by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And He is most knowing of what they do﴾. The majority read: 'And they were driven,' and 'and they were brought forth' with the first letter being broken, and Hasan, Ibn Wathab, Asim, and Al-Amash read it with a slight emphasis on the dammah. 'In groups' means: separate groups, and one of them is a group. His saying, exalted and majestic is He: 'It was opened' is the response to 'when,' and the speech here indicates that its opening only occurs after their arrival, and their standing before its opening is a humiliation for them, and thus is the case with prisons and places of punishment, unlike His saying regarding the people of Paradise: 'And it was opened,' with the conjunction indicating that they find it opened like the abodes of joy.
The majority read: "[Futihat]" with a strong ت in both instances. Aasim, Hamzah, and Al-Kisai read it with a softened ت, which is the reading of Talhah and Al-Amash. Then, He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the stopping of the guardians regarding the coming of the messengers. The majority read: ﴿ [Ya'tikum]﴾ with a ي from below, while Al-A'raj read: [Ta'tikum] with a ت from above. His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿ "Minkum"﴾ is greater in proof, meaning: messengers from your kind, whose aims and words will not be difficult for you to grasp.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿ Qalu Bala ﴾ is a response to the assertion of the negation of the matter, and it is not permissible here to respond with "Na'am" because they used to say: Yes, they did not come to us. Thus, the meaning would be arranged: Then they will find no proof, except that the word of punishment has been established against them, meaning the word that necessitates from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, their eternal dwelling in the fire, which is a statement of His previous decree against them regarding that, and it is what is in His saying, glorified and exalted is He, to Iblis: ﴿ I will surely fill Hell with you and with those who follow you among them all ﴾ [Sad: 85].
And "Al-Mathwa" means the place of residence.
