Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Or have they taken besides Allah intercessors? Say, 'Even if they do not possess anything and do not understand.'" "Say, 'To Allah belongs all intercession. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned.'" "And when Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion. But when those besides Him are mentioned, behold, they rejoice."
[Or] here is a disjunction from what preceded it. It is estimated with an alif and rather, and this is a confirmation and reproach. So Allah, exalted and majestic is He, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to confront them with the matter, and that they are content with this while the idols are in the form of this and that, having no ownership and no understanding.
And the waw in His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Even if" is a conjunction that has been entered upon by the alif of interrogation. Whenever the alif of interrogation enters upon the waw of conjunction or the fa, it creates the meaning of confirmation.
Then He commanded him to inform that all intercession is indeed for Allah, exalted and majestic is He, and "all" is in the accusative case as a state. The meaning is that Allah, exalted and majestic is He, intercedes, and then no one intercedes before His intercession except by His permission. Thus, since the intercession of others is contingent upon His permission, all intercession belongs to Him and is from Him.
And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And when Allah alone is mentioned," the verse, Mujahid and others said: "It was revealed when the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, recited Surah An-Najm at the Kaaba in the presence of the disbelievers. At that time, Satan cast into his wish, saying, 'Indeed, they are the exalted cranes, and indeed, their intercession is to be hoped for.'" So the disbelievers rejoiced at that and were pleased. But when Allah removed what Satan had cast, they became averse and arrogant, and their souls shrank with aversion. Its meaning is that they contracted with pride, disdain, dislike, and repulsion. From this is the saying of Amr ibn Kulthum:
If the thikaf bites with it, they shrink back, And they turn away like a flock of gazelles.
And "those besides Him" refers to those who worship others besides Him. The expression in these verses regarding the idols is as it comes regarding those who act, in that it has become in the realm of those who understand. And harm and benefit and divinity have been attributed to it, and that has been negated from it. Thus, it has been treated as one who understands. And "alone" is in the accusative case according to Sibawayh as a source, and according to Al-Farra as a state.
