Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying, exalted and glorious is He: "Is he whom Allah has opened his heart to Islam, so he is upon a light from his Lord? So woe to those whose hearts are hardened from the remembrance of Allah. Those are in clear error." "Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book, consistent and repeating. The skins shiver from it of those who fear their Lord, then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He guides by it whom He wills, and whom Allah leads astray, for him there is no guide." It has been narrated that this verse: "Is he whom Allah has opened his heart to Islam" was revealed about Ali and Hamza, may Allah be pleased with them, and Abu Lahab and his son, who were among those whose hearts were hardened. And there is an omitted statement indicated by the apparent meaning, its estimation is: like the hard-hearted one who turns away from the command of Allah. And "Allah has opened his heart" is a metaphor for his attainment of good understanding and belief in Allah. And "the light" is the guidance of Allah, and it is most similar to light. Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: We said: O Messenger of Allah, how is the opening of the heart? He said: "When light enters the heart, it expands and opens up." We said: And what is the sign of that? He said: "Turning back to the abode of eternity, distancing oneself from the abode of deception, and preparing for death." And "hardness" is the severity of the heart, and it is derived from the hardness of stone. He likened the heart of the disbeliever to it in its hardness and lack of responsiveness to admonition. Malik ibn Dinar said: "No servant has been struck with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart." And his saying: "So woe to those whose hearts are hardened" indicates the omitted estimation. And His saying, exalted and glorious is He: "Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book, consistent" means the Qur'an. It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the reason for this verse is that a group of the Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us beautiful stories and inform us of the news of the ages, so this verse was revealed regarding that. And His saying: "consistent" means: equal, with no contradiction or conflict in it, rather some of it resembles some in the eloquence of the wording, the strength of the proofs, and the nobility of the meanings; for it is certainty in the beliefs about Allah, exalted and glorious is He, and His attributes, actions, and legislation. And His saying: "repeating" means: a place of repetition for the stories, judgments, and admonitions, it is repeated therein and one does not tire of it, nor does it suffer what is suffered by the repeated speech. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The matter is repeated therein multiple times. And "repeating" does not decline because it is a plural that has no singular equivalent.
And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿The skins of those who fear their Lord tremble from it﴾ is an expression of the hair standing on end when one is overcome by fear. This also refers to a soft heart when hearing an admonition or a stern recitation of the Qur'an and similar things. This is a sign of the occurrence of the humbling meaning in the heart of the listener. In the hadith, it is mentioned that 'Ubayy ibn Ka'b recited before the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and the hearts softened. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Seize the opportunity for supplication at the moment of softness, for it is a mercy." And Al-Abbas said: The Prophet, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, said: "Whoever's skin trembles out of fear of Allah, his sins will fall away from him just as the leaves fall from a dry tree." Asma' bint Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with both of them, said: The companions would have tears in their eyes and their skins would tremble upon hearing the Qur'an. It was said to her: Indeed, there are people today who, when one of them hears the Qur'an, falls down unconscious. She said: I seek refuge with Allah from the devil. Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with both of them, said: He saw someone fall down when hearing the Qur'an: We fear Allah and we do not fall down. The devil enters the heart of one of them. Ibn Sirin said: Between us and those who fall down when the Qur'an is recited, one should place one of them against a wall, extending his legs, then the entire Qur'an should be recited to him. If he throws himself down, he is truthful.
And His saying: ﴿That is the guidance of Allah﴾ may refer to the Qur'an, meaning: That which has this description is the guidance of Allah. It may also refer to fear and the trembling of the skin, meaning: That is a sign of the guidance of Allah. Whoever places ﴿[tremble]﴾ in the position of description does not stop at ﴿" , " and whoever places it as a new statement that is disconnected stops at
