Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿And these do not await anything except for a single shout, which there is no stopping for﴾ ﴿And they said, Our Lord, hasten for us our share before the Day of Judgment﴾ ﴿Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant David, the possessor of strength. Indeed, he was one who frequently turned back [to Allah]﴾ ﴿Indeed, We subjected the mountains with him, praising [Allah] in the evening and at sunrise﴾ ﴿And the birds gathered, all of them to him were turning back [to Allah]﴾ ﴿And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and decisive speech﴾
﴿ "They do not await" ﴾ means: they are waiting. This is news from Allah, the Most High, to His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, which existence has confirmed. The shout - according to this interpretation - is a reference to all that has befallen them of killing, captivity, and defeat. This is as you say: time has shouted at them. Qatadah said: He warned them with the shout of the Resurrection and the blowing of the trumpet. Al-Thalabi said: This interpretation has been narrated as elevated to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. A group said: He, exalted is He, warned them with a shout by which they will be destroyed in this world. According to these two interpretations, the meaning of the words is that they are in the path of punishment and under a serious matter, awaiting nothing in it except destruction. It does not mean a warning of something specific that Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, is waiting for in it as in the first interpretation. The majority read: ﴿ "no stopping" ﴾ with a فتح (fathah) on the فاء (fa). Hamzah, Al-Kisai, Ibn Wathab, Al-Amash, and Abu Abdur-Rahman read: "no stopping" with a ضم (dhammah) on the فاء (fa). Ibn Abbas and others said: They are of one meaning, that is: there is no stopping or return for them, rather it is continuous until their destruction. And from it: "the stopping of milking": the period between the two sucklings. They likened it to the cutting of hair and its cutting, and other than that. And from it is the hadith about the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "Whoever stays guard over a she-camel, Allah has forbidden his body to the fire." Ibn Zayd, Abu Ubaidah, Mu'tarij, and Al-Farra said: The meaning is different; the ضم (dhammah) as previously mentioned from the meaning of "no stopping", and the فتح (fathah) means the return to consciousness, that is: there will be for them after this shout no return to consciousness or rest. So "no stopping" is like "response", from the one who responded.
Then He, exalted and majestic is He, mentioned about them that they said: ﴿Our Lord, hasten for us our share before the Day of Judgment﴾. And "the share" means: the portion and the lot. "The share" also means: the decree and the document from the authority regarding connection and similar matters. From it is the saying of Al-A'sha:
؎ And neither the king Al-Nu'man on the day I met him ∗∗∗ with his joy gives the shares and is content
And it is from "I cut", that is: I severed. People have differed regarding "the share" here, what they intended by it. Sa'id ibn Jubair said: They intended by it: hasten for us our share of good and blessings in our world. Abu Al-Aliyah and Al-Kalbi said: They intended: hasten for us our records in our right hands, and that was when they heard in the Qur'an that the records will be given on the Day of Resurrection in the right and left hands, they said this. Ibn Abbas and others said: They intended the opposite of this from punishment and similar matters. This is akin to their saying: ﴿So send down upon us stones from the heaven﴾ [Al-Anfal: 32]. And Al-Suddi said: The meaning is: Show us our dwellings in Paradise so that we may follow you.
The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said.
And on every interpretation, their words came from a direction of mockery and jest. This is indicated by what is known of their disbelief and its continuation. The wording of the verse gives acknowledgment of the Day of Judgment.
And His saying, "Be patient over what they say," means: from these sayings by which they intend mockery, and do not pay attention to them. "And remember Our servant David, the possessor of strength," in religion and proclaiming it. So take him as an example and be supported as he was supported. "The strength" refers to power, and it in David includes physical strength and his strength in obedience. "The oft-repentant" refers to one who frequently returns to the obedience of Allah, and this was said by Mujahid and Ibn Zayd. Al-Suddi interpreted it as the one who glorifies, and Al-Tha'labi mentioned that Abu Huraira said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The blue-eyed is a blessing," and David was blue-eyed. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informed about what He granted to David of honor in that He made the mountains glorify with him. The apparent meaning of the verse is the generality of the mountains. A group said: Rather, it is the mountains that were with him and around him, and the glorification of the mountains here is a reality. "The rising" refers to the time of the sun's light and its elevation, and from it is their saying: "Shine, O Thabir, so that we may attack," meaning: enter into the rising. And in these two times was the prayer of the Children of Israel. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Duha prayer for us is the prayer of the rising, and it is in this verse.
And His saying: "And the birds" is an addition to "the mountains," meaning: and We made the birds submissive. "Gathered" is in the accusative as a state, and its meaning is: a group. Ibn Abi Abla read: [and the birds are gathered] in the nominative in both cases. The pronoun in "to him" a group said: it refers back to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, so "everything" in this is meant to refer to David, the mountains, and the birds. And some groups said: it refers back to David, peace be upon him, and "everything" refers to the mountains and the birds.
And His saying, "And We strengthened his kingdom" is a general expression for all that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, granted him of strength, goodness, and blessings. Some of the interpreters specified certain things in this, so Al-Suddi said: with armies, and others said: with a majesty that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, placed upon him. The majority read: "And We strengthened" with the first dal being lightened, and it was narrated from Al-Hasan: (We strengthened) with its emphasis for exaggeration. And "wisdom": understanding in religion and quality of insight, this is the saying of a group, and another group said: He meant by (wisdom) prophethood. Abu Al-Aliya said: Wisdom is knowledge that does not contradict reason.
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It is the beliefs of proof.
People differed regarding "the decisive speech." Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and Al-Suddi said: It is the decisive judgment between people with truth and its correctness and understanding. Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, and Shuraih, and Al-Sha'bi said: It is the obligation of the oath upon the one accused, and the evidence upon the claimant. And Ziyad and Al-Sha'bi also said: He meant the saying: "As for what follows," for he was the first to say it.

And the one who gives it the wording of the verse is that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has granted him that when he addressed a matter, he elaborated on the meaning and clarified it, and explained it. He does not let limitation or weakness affect him in that. This is a quality that few can attain. So his words, blessings and peace be upon him, were decisive. And Allah, blessed and exalted is He, has said regarding the quality of the Qur'an: "Indeed, it is a decisive word" [Al-Takwir: 13]. And Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, surpasses this degree by being concise in expression and gathering many meanings in a simple wording. This is what he, blessings and peace be upon him, was specialized in with his saying: "And I was given the comprehensive words," for it is in the attributes that no one was given before him. And the mention of "comprehensive words" is acknowledged and accepted for him, blessings and peace be upon him.
