His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Then some of them turned to others, questioning. A speaker among them said, 'Indeed, I had a companion.' He says, 'Are you among the believers? When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?' This questioning among the people of Paradise is a questioning of comfort and enjoyment. They remember their affairs in Paradise and the matters of the world, and the state of obedience and faith therein. Then Allah, exalted and majestic is He, informed about the saying of a speaker among them in his story. This is an example for everyone who has a bad companion. This example gives caution against bad companions and awareness of their disobedience. He expressed the words of this man as a progression from what was a certain matter that would inevitably occur. Ibn Abbas and others said: These two were a believer and a disbeliever. A group said: They are the two that Allah, exalted and majestic is He, mentioned in His saying: "Oh, I wish I had not taken such a one as a friend" [Al-Furqan: 28]. Mujahid said: He was a human and a jinn from the disbelieving devils, but the first is more correct. The majority read: "Among the believers" with a lightening of the letter ص, from the word تصديق. A group read with a strengthening of the letter ص, from the word تصدق. Furāt ibn Thalabah al-Bahrānī said in the stories of these two: They were partners in eight thousand dinars. One of them worshipped Allah and intended from trade and observation, while the other was a disbeliever who focused on his wealth. He dissolved the partnership with the believer and remained alone due to the believer's shortcomings. Then he would present whatever he bought - something from a house, a maid, a garden, and the like - to that believer and boast over him. The believer would then go away and give charity equivalent to that price to buy from Allah in Paradise. Thus, their affair in the Hereafter is what this verse encompasses. Al-Tabarī said: This narration supports the reading with the strengthening. And "resurrected" means: rewarded and held accountable, as said by Ibn Abbas, Qatadah, and al-Suddi. And الدين (the religion) is the recompense, as has been mentioned.
