Commentary

His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Allah is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of old." "So they denied him, and indeed they will be brought forth." "Except for the chosen servants of Allah." "And We left upon him in the later generations." "Peace be upon Elias." "Indeed, thus do We reward the good-doers." "Indeed, he is from Our believing servants." "And indeed, Lot was among the messengers." "When We saved him and his family all together." "Except for an old woman among those who remained behind." "Then We destroyed the others." "And indeed, you pass by them in the morning." "And at night. Do you not understand?"

Hamzah, Al-Kisai, and Asim read with the accusative of all as a substitute for his saying: "the good-doers," and the others, including Asim, read with the nominative as a separate statement. The pronoun in "they denied him" refers back to the people of Elias. And "brought forth" means gathered for the punishment of Allah. The interpretation of what remains of the verse has been previously explained, and the statement has also been previously mentioned regarding His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Peace be upon Elias."

As for Lot, it is said that he is the son of his brother's sister, and his story has been mentioned in full. His wife is the old woman who was destroyed, and she was a disbeliever. She was either concealing it from him or openly declaring it. And marrying polytheists and remaining with them was permissible. And "those who remained behind" means those who stayed, as "ghabara" means to remain, and here it means she remained in destruction.

Then, He addressed Quraysh, or it is in the meaning: Say to them, O Muhammad: "Indeed, you pass by them in the morning and at night, so it is necessary that you reflect and consider. Then He reprimanded them with His saying: "Do you not understand?"
