Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' He, the Exalted and Majestic, says: "And the Day He gathers them all together, then He says to the angels, 'Were these the ones you were worshiping?'" They will say, 'Glorified are You! You are our Protector against them. Rather, they were worshiping the jinn; most of them were believers in them.'" "So today, none of you will possess for another benefit or harm. And We will say to those who wronged, 'Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny.'" "And when Our clear verses are recited to them, they say, 'This is nothing but a man who wants to turn you away from what your forefathers used to worship.' And they say, 'This is nothing but a falsehood fabricated.' And those who disbelieved say of the truth when it has come to them, 'This is nothing but clear magic.'" This is a verse of warning for the disbelievers, and the meaning is: remember the Day. The majority read: "We will gather them," and "Then We will say" with the letter 'n' in both. Abu Bakr narrated it from Asim, and Hafs read from Asim with the letter 'y' in both. Abu Hatim mentioned it from Abu Amr. The saying to the angels is a stopping point from which the proof against the disbelievers of their worship is established, similar to His saying, the Exalted, to Jesus, peace be upon him: "Did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" [Al-Ma'idah: 116] When Allah, the Exalted, says this to the angels, they will say: "Glorified are You!" meaning: we declare You free from what these disbelievers have done. Then they absolve themselves by saying: "You are our Protector against them," meaning they want to be free from having any knowledge, approval, or participation in the fact that humans worship them. Then they affirm that humans only worshiped the jinn with the approval of the jinn and by their misleading of humans. The angels did not deny the worship of humans of them; rather, they affirmed that they had no participation in that. Then they blamed the jinn. The worship of humans of the jinn is, as we know, through their obedience to them and listening to their whispers and temptations. This is a type of worship, and it may be permissible if there are among the disbelieving nations those who worship the jinn. In the Quran, there are verses from which this appears in Al-An'am and others. Then He, glorified and exalted is He, said: "So today," and in the speech, there is an omission, the estimation of which is: "It will be said to them," meaning: to those who worshiped and to those who were worshiped: "None of you will possess for another benefit or harm." And His saying, the Exalted: "And when Our verses are recited to them." He mentioned in this verse their sayings and types of their words when the Quran is recited to them, and they hear its wisdom and clear proofs. One who criticizes the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, says that he disparages the idols and the religion of the forefathers. Another criticizes him by saying that this Quran is fabricated, meaning: made up by Muhammad, claiming that it is from Allah. Another criticizes him by saying that what he has of softness and the drawing of souls and the inclining of ears is nothing but magic by which he attracts and calls. Glorified is Allah above their words, and His legislation is sanctified from their disparagement.
