Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' The Exalted said: ﴿And those who strive against Our signs, seeking to defeat them, they are in the punishment, brought forth﴾ ﴿Say, 'Indeed, my Lord extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. And whatever you spend of anything, He replaces it. And He is the Best of Providers.'﴾ When the Exalted mentioned the believers who do righteous deeds and their reward, He followed it by mentioning their opposites and their punishment to highlight the difference in ranks. A group read: 'مُعاجِزِينَ' (striving against), and another group read 'مُعَجِّزِينَ' (defeated), and its interpretation has been previously mentioned. 'مُحْضَرُونَ' (brought forth) is from the meaning of bringing and preparing. Then He repeated the statement about the extension of provision and its restriction for emphasis and clarification. Here, He meant the provision of the believers, and it is not directed towards the first meaning which was brought for the disbelievers. Rather, this is here in the context of admonition and discouragement from the world, and encouragement to spend in acts of obedience. Then He promised replacement in that, which is conditional upon moderation and intention in obedience and repelling harm. This promise is fulfilled, either in this world or in the Hereafter. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Indeed, Allah said to me: Spend, and I will spend upon you.' And in Sahih al-Bukhari: 'The angel calls every day, O Allah, give the spender a replacement, and another angel says: O Allah, give the one who withholds destruction.' As for His saying: ﴿And He is the Best of Providers﴾, it is said regarding a person: that he provides for his dependents, and the leader for his soldiers. However, that is from wealth that is owned by them. But Allah, the Exalted, is from treasures that do not perish, and from bringing forth from non-existence to existence. Al-Amash read: 'وَيُقَدِّرُ' (and restricts) with the 'yaa' pronounced and the 'dāl' emphasized.
