His saying, exalted and majestic is He:

"Say, who provides for you from the heavens and the earth? Say, Allah. And indeed, we or you are upon guidance or in manifest error." "Say, you will not be asked about what we have committed, nor will we be asked about what you do." "Say, our Lord will gather us together, then He will open between us in truth, and He is the All-Knowing Judge." "Say, show me those whom you have associated with Him as partners. No! Rather, He is Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

Allah, blessed and exalted is He, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in the context of argumentation and establishing proof regarding the provider for them from the heavens and the earth [to ask them]: Who is He? Then He commanded him to be concise in his argument by providing the answer to the question; for they are in astonishment and confusion from the question, and there is no answer for them or for the creation except to say: It is Allah. And this way is clear in every question; for the one who argues wants to be concise and move on to another proof that he presents. There are many similar instances of this in the Qur'an.

And His saying, exalted is He: "And indeed, we or you..." is a form of gentleness in the invitation and dialogue, and the meaning is, as you would say to someone who disagrees with you on a matter: One of us is wrong, meaning: be certain and pay attention, and the implication of your words is that your opponent is the one who is wrong. So likewise, this is its meaning: "And indeed, we are upon guidance or in manifest error, and indeed, you are upon guidance or in manifest error, so let us clarify it." The intent is that error is within the scope of those addressed, and one of the two reports is omitted to indicate the remaining one. Abu Ubaidah said: "Or" in the verse (p-186) means the same as "and," and the estimation is: "And we and you are upon guidance or in manifest error," and they are two reports that are not independent. This statement is not directed, and the wording does not support it, although the meaning - in any case - necessitates that guidance is within the scope of the believers and error is within the scope of the disbelievers.

And His saying, exalted is He: "Say, you will not be asked about what we have committed..." is a truce and a cessation, and it is abrogated by the verse of the sword.

And His saying, exalted is He: "Say, our Lord will gather us together..." is a notification of the resurrection from the graves, and His saying: "He will open" means He will judge, and "the All-Knowing Judge" is well-known in the language of Yemen, and all of this is abrogated by the sword.

And His saying, exalted is He: "Say, show me..." may imply the vision of the heart, so His saying: "partners" is the third object, and this is the correct interpretation, meaning: show me with proof and evidence how the partnership is. A group said: It is the vision of the eye, and "partners" is a state of the pronoun that is the object of "you have associated" which returns to "those." This is weak, for the call for the vision of the eye in this is unnecessary. And His saying: "No!" is a refutation of what has been established from their doctrine regarding associating partners with Allah, exalted and majestic is He, and He described Himself with that which is befitting of Him from might and wisdom.
