Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good, then he has certainly held onto the firmest handhold. And to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters." "And whoever disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve you. To Us is their return, and We will inform them of what they did. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that which is in the breasts." "We will enjoy them for a little, then We will force them to a severe punishment." "And if you were to ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they would surely say Allah. Say, 'Praise is due to Allah.' But most of them do not know." "To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Indeed, Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy." When Allah, the Exalted, mentioned the state of the disbelievers, He followed that with a mention of the state of the believers so that the distinction may be clear and the souls may be motivated to seek what is better. The majority of the reciters read: "submits" with a silent 's' and a light 'l', while Abdullah ibn Muslim and Abu Abdur-Rahman read: "submits" with an open 's' and a doubled 'l'. Its meaning is to purify, direct, and submit with it. The "face" here refers to the limb, borrowed for the intention; for the one who intends something is facing it with his face. Thus, it was borrowed for the meanings. The "doer of good" is the one who combines words and actions, and he is the one whom the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, explained when Jibril, peace be upon him, asked him. The "firmest handhold" is a metaphor for the saving matter that is not feared to be impossible or disrupted. The handholds are the places of attachment, so the believer is as if he is attached to the command of Allah, blessed and exalted is He, and he likened that to a handhold. The "matters" is the plural of matter and is not opposed to prohibition. Then Allah, exalted and majestic is He, consoled His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding his distress over the disbelief of his people and their turning away, commanding him not to grieve over that, but rather to focus on what he has been tasked with in conveying, and that all will return to Allah, the Exalted. A group read: "grieve you" from the quadrilateral, while another group read: "grieves you" from the trilateral. "What is in the breasts" refers to what is in them, and the intent of that is towards beliefs and opinions. From that is their saying: "The wolf is envious of that which is in his belly," and from it is the saying of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him: "The one with the belly is the daughter of Khawija." And the "little enjoyment" is the lifespan in this world, and the "severe punishment" means the painful torment.
Then he established the proof against them regarding the matter of the idols by stating that they acknowledge that Allah, the Exalted, is the Creator of the creations, and yet they call upon other than Him. The meaning is: Say, 'Praise be to Allah for the emergence of the proof against you.' And His saying, the Exalted: 'Rather, most of them' is a transition from an implied statement, its implication being that their claims are not true, and similar to this. And His saying: 'Most of them' is based on its original meaning; because among them are those whose actions are exceptional, like Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufail and Warqah ibn Nawfal. It is also possible that the reference is to one who is prepared to submit. Then he informed regarding the ruling and the resolution of the matter that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is in them. That is to say: The statements of these people have no meaning or reality, and the meaning is: That which has no need for its existence and perfection for anything, nor is there any deficiency in any aspect. And 'the Praiseworthy' is the one who is praised, meaning: So is He in Himself and His attributes.
