'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' His saying, the Exalted and Majestic: "And if We were to send a wind and they saw it turned yellow, they would continue to disbelieve thereafter." "For indeed, you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they have turned away, retreating." "And you are not a guide for the blind from their misguidance. You can only make hear those who believe in Our signs; so they are Muslims." Then He informed, the Exalted, about the state of the fluctuation of the son of Adam, that he is far from being pleased with the rain. When Allah sends a wind and the plants turn yellow, he continues to disbelieve out of anxiety from it and a lack of reliance and submission to Allah, the Exalted and Majestic. The pronoun in "they saw it" refers to the plants as we have said, or to the effect, which is the vegetation by which the earth has been revived. Some said it refers to the clouds, and others said it refers to the wind. All of this is weak. The "if" in "if We were to send" indicates the coming of an oath, and in "they would continue to disbelieve," the "lam" is the lam of the oath. His saying, the Exalted: "they would continue to disbelieve" is a past tense verb placed in the position of the future and substituted for it; because the recompense here can only be for an action in the future, but the past tense is used in place of the future in some instances to affirm its occurrence. And His saying, the Exalted: "For indeed, you cannot make the dead hear"... is a metaphor for the disbelievers. The saying has already been mentioned regarding similar verses in Surah An-Naml. And all of them read: "you cannot make hear" with a rounded ta and the accusative of "the deaf." Ibn Kathir and Abbas from Abu Amr read: "you can make hear" with an open ya and "the deaf" in the nominative. The majority read: "a guide for the blind" with the addition, and Yahya ibn Al-Harith and Abu Haywah read: "a guide" with tanween and "the blind" in the accusative. His saying: "if you can make hear only those who believe" means: if you can make hear in a way that benefits and is effective. As for the hearing of the disbelievers, it is not effective, so they are equal. And His saying, the Exalted: "from their misguidance," since guidance involves turning away, it is transitive with "from" just as it is transitive with "turning away." The meaning of the verse is: It is not in your power, O Muhammad, nor upon you to guide. Ibn Abi Abla read: "from their misguidance."
