His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Say, 'Travel in the land and observe how was the end of those before. Most of them were polytheists.'" "So establish your face for the religion, inclining to truth, before there comes a Day from Allah of which there is no repelling. On that Day, they will be split apart." "Whoever disbelieves, upon him is [the consequence of] his disbelief; and whoever does righteousness - for themselves they prepare." This is a warning to Quraysh and a command for them to take heed from those nations that have passed and the bad consequences of their disbelief and polytheism. Then, the Exalted commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to establish his face, meaning: direct your intention and effort towards the religion, that is, towards its path, its actions, and its beliefs. And "the upright" originally is "the one who establishes." The yā and the wāw came together, and the yā preceded while it is silent, so the wāw was changed to a yā and the first was assimilated into the second. Then He warned him, blessed and exalted is He, of the Day of Resurrection, a warning that encompasses the world, and to them is the intention. And "there is no repelling" means: there is no return to an action nor desire for it, nor is there any escape from it. It is possible that He means: no one will repel it until it occurs, and this is apparent according to the wording. And "they will be split apart" means: they will be separated after their gathering, and this is the splitting. The meaning of "they will be separated" is: to Paradise and to Hell. Then He divided the two groups by rulings that will apply to them based on their actions in this world. Then He expressed disbelief with "upon him," which conveys weight and difficulty, and about righteous deeds with the lām that is for possession. And "they prepare" means: they make ready and arrange, and it is a metaphor transferred from bedding and the like to states and ranks. Mujahid said: This preparation is for the grave.
