Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "Say, 'We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and what was given to Moses and Jesus and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims to Him.'" "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers." (p-276) The meaning: Say, O Muhammad, you and your nation: We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us, which is the Qur'an and the command of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him; and the revelation to the Prophet of the nation is a revelation to it. Ishmael was mentioned first due to his age, and the rest of the verse is clear. Then Allah decreed in His saying: "And whoever seeks..." the verse, that He does not accept from any human a religion other than the religion of Islam, which is the one that agrees in its beliefs with the religion of all those mentioned among the Prophets, which is the lenient Hanifiyyah. And 'Ikrimah said: When this verse was revealed, the people of the sects said to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: We have submitted before you and we are Muslims. So Allah said to him: Argue with them, O Muhammad, and He revealed to him: "And due to Allah upon the people is pilgrimage to the House." [Al-Imran: 97] So the Muslims performed pilgrimage while the disbelievers remained behind. Al-Tabari narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: It was revealed: "Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Christians and the Sabians, whoever has believed in Allah and the Last Day..." [Al-Baqarah: 62], until His saying: "And they will not grieve." [Al-Baqarah: 62] Then Allah revealed after it: "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him..." the verse. This is an indication of abrogation. And His saying: "in the Hereafter" is related to an implied meaning, its implication being: a loser in the Hereafter, because the definite article in 'the losers' is in the sense of the connected. And some of the commentators said: That His saying: "And whoever seeks..." the verse was revealed concerning Al-Harith ibn Suwayd, but Al-Tabari did not mention that.
