Tafsir for verses: 29:18, 29:19, 29:20
18And if you reject me, then many nations have rejected their messengers before you. The messenger has no more obligation than to convey the message clearly.” 19Did they not see how Allah originates the creation, then He will do it again. Surely this is easy for Allah. 20Say, “Go about in the land and look how He has originated the creation. Then Allah will create the subsequent creation. Surely Allah is powerful to do everything.”

Commentary

His saying, exalted and glorious is He: "And if you deny, then nations before you have denied. And there is upon the Messenger only the clear conveying." "Have they not seen how Allah begins creation, then He brings it back? Indeed, that is easy for Allah." "Say, 'Travel in the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed, Allah is capable of all things.'"

In His saying, the Most High: "And if you deny," the verse is a warning, meaning: nations other than you have denied and were punished. And upon the Messenger is only the conveying, and everyone thereafter is held accountable for their deeds.

Hamzah, Al-Kisai, and Asim - with a difference from him - read: "Have you not seen" with the 'ta', and the others read: "Have they not seen" with the 'ya'. The first is for addressing, and the second is for narrating about the absent. The majority read: "begins," and Al-Zubair, Isa, and Abu Amr - with a difference from him - read: "starts."

These references appear with the news of reviving the earth and vegetation and its return, and similar matters that are evidence for resurrection from the graves and gathering. It is possible that he means: Have they not seen with evidence and observation how it is possible for Allah, blessed and exalted is He, to bring back bodies after death? This is the interpretation of Qatadah. And Al-Rabi' ibn Anas said: The meaning is: How He begins the creation of man, then brings him back to other states, even to dust. And Muqatil said: The creation in this verse is night and day.

Then Allah, exalted and glorious is He, commanded His Prophet - and it is possible that it is Muhammad if there is an interruption between two speeches in the story of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon them - to command them - in the context of argumentation - to travel in the land and observe in every region and in every nation, ancient and modern. For that leads to the existence of no creator except Allah, blessed and exalted is He, and no initiator of creation besides Him. Then it was conveyed - in the context of news - that Allah, exalted and glorious is He, is the initiator of the resurrection from the graves.

And Ibn Kathir and Abu Amr read: "the creation" in the form of (fa'alah), which is the reading of Al-A'raj. This is as you say: 'ra'fa' and 'ra'afa'. The others read: "the creation" in the form of (fa'lah). Al-Zuhri read: "the creation" with a shaddah in all of the Quran. The resurrection from the graves is supported by the evidence of reason for its possibility, and the legislations have informed of its occurrence and existence.
