Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿And let them not turn you away from the verses of Allah after they have been sent down to you. And call to your Lord, and do not be among the polytheists.﴾ ﴿And do not call upon another god with Allah. There is no god except Him. Everything is perishing except His Face. To Him belongs the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.﴾
And His saying, the Most High: "And let them not turn you away" means: by their words and lies and harm, and do not turn towards them and proceed with your affair. And Ya'qub read: "And let them not turn you away" with the nun being pronounced firmly. And His saying: ﴿And call to your Lord﴾ and the entirety of the verse includes conciliation and peacefulness. All of this has been abrogated by the verse of the sword.
The reason for this verse is that Quraysh were calling the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, to honor their idols. At that time, Satan cast into his wish the matter of the al-Gharaniq.
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿And do not call upon another god with Allah﴾ is a prohibition against what they are upon. They are the intended ones even if the wording does not mention them. And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿Except His Face﴾ a group said: it is an expression of the essence, and the meaning is: everything perishes except Him. This was said by al-Tabari and a group among them Abu al-Ma'ali, may Allah have mercy on him. And al-Zajjaj said: except Him. And Sufyan al-Thawri said: the intended meaning is: except what is done for His Face, meaning: what is done for His essence from obedience and turning towards Him. From this is the saying of the poet:
........... The Lord of the servants is towards Him the face and the deed.
And from this is the saying of the one who said: "I intended by my action the Face of Allah, the Most High." And from this is His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face.﴾ [al-An'am: 52].
And His saying, the Most High: ﴿To Him belongs the judgment﴾ means the separation of judgment and its enforcement in this world and the Hereafter. And His saying: ﴿And to Him you will be returned﴾ is news of the gathering and the return from the graves. And the majority read: "You will be returned" with the ta and the opening of the jim. And 'Isa read: "They will return" with the opening of the ta and the kasra of the jim. And Abu Amr read with both ways.
The interpretation of Surah al-Qasas is complete, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
And blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family and all his companions.
