Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿The One who created me, so He guides me﴾ ﴿And the One who feeds me and gives me drink﴾ ﴿And when I am ill, He heals me﴾ ﴿And the One who causes me to die, then gives me life﴾ ﴿And the One in whom I hope that He will forgive my sin on the Day of Judgment﴾ ﴿My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous﴾ ﴿And grant me a goodly tongue among the later generations﴾ ﴿And make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Delight﴾ ﴿And forgive my father, indeed he was of the misguided﴾ ﴿And do not disgrace me on the Day they are resurrected﴾
Ibrahim, peace be upon him, praised Allah, the Most High, with these attributes by which Allah, the Most High, is described. The one who possesses these attributes deserves the active attributes that pertain to humans. And ﴿The One who created me﴾ by His power, (p-490) ﴿so He guides me﴾ means: He guides me to His obedience. And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿He feeds me and gives me drink﴾ is a renewal of the blessing in sustenance. Abu Bakr al-Warraq said in the book of al-Thalabi: The meaning is: He feeds me without food, and gives me drink without drink, as the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, I spend the night with my Lord who feeds me and gives me drink." And Ibrahim, peace be upon him, attributed illness to himself and healing to Allah, exalted and majestic is He. This is good etiquette in expression, and all is from Allah. This is like the saying of al-Khidr, peace be upon him: ﴿So I intended to damage it﴾ [Al-Kahf: 79]. And Ja'far al-Sadiq said: When I am ill with sins, He heals me with repentance. The majority read these actions: [guides me, gives me drink, heals me - gives me life] without the letter 'ya', while Nafi' and Ibn Ishaq read: "guides me" with the 'ya', and likewise what follows it.
And Ibrahim, peace be upon him, stopped himself at the hope for forgiveness. This is evidence of the intensity of his fear despite his status and closeness. And his saying: "my sin" most of the interpreters have taken to mean his three lies: his saying: "She is my sister" regarding Sarah, and his saying: ﴿Indeed, I am ill﴾ [As-Saffat: 89], and his saying: ﴿Rather, it was done by their chief﴾ [Al-Anbiya: 63]. And a group said: He meant by sin the general term, estimating it in all his matters without specification.
The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And this is clearer to me; because those three have been explained by many scholars as being figurative expressions. And although they are lies according to the saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "Ibrahim, peace be upon him, did not lie except three lies," and according to what is in the hadith of intercession regarding Ibrahim, peace be upon him: "My soul, my soul," and he mentioned his lies, and they are for the sake of interests and aiding the law and truth. The majority read: "my sin" in the singular, while al-Hasan read: "my sins" in the plural.
And the "judgment" that Ibrahim, peace be upon him, called for is wisdom and prophethood. Ibrahim's, peace be upon him, supplication in such a matter is in the meaning of affirmation and continuity. And "his being joined with the righteous" means his being granted success in a deed that he is included among them or that he is gathered with them in Paradise. And Allah, blessed and exalted is He, answered him as He said: ﴿And indeed, he will be among the righteous in the Hereafter﴾ [An-Nahl: 122]. And "a tongue of truth" is praise and the perpetuation of status, by consensus of the interpreters. Likewise, Allah answered his supplication, so every nation adheres to him and honors him, and he is upon the Hanifiyyah that Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, brought. Al-Makki said: It is said that the meaning of his asking is that there should be among his descendants in the end of time one who upholds the truth, and the supplication was answered in Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him.
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And this is a good meaning, except that the wording of the verse does not give it except by a manipulation of the wording.
And when he finished with the demands of this world, he sought the happiness of the Hereafter, which is the Garden of Bliss, and he likened it to what is inherited. Allah, exalted is He, said: ﴿That is the Garden which We will inherit from Our servants who were fearing﴾ [Maryam: 63]. And his seeking forgiveness for his father in this verse is before it becomes clear to him, by his death upon disbelief, that he is an enemy to him, meaning it is decreed upon him, and it is about the mentioned promise. Ubayy ibn Ka'b read: "And forgive my parents, indeed they were among the misguided."
﴿And do not disgrace me﴾ either from disgrace, which is humiliation, or from shyness, which is modesty. And the pronoun in "they will be resurrected" is the pronoun of the servants, as it is known, or the pronoun of the misguided, and it would be among the totality of seeking forgiveness.
